Well after the weekend with Jindys longbow ive been bitten by the trad bug.
So if any of you guys have an old trad bow you'd like to part with let me know. At the moment i only want something relatively cheap with a bit of power still. I have a 31 inch draw.

Longbow or curve, i dont mind.

Cheers, Cam

The Woomera's are $475 now so that is a steal. I had actually tried to get a mate to buy Axe's but he is fixed on a recurve now.

Ausbow Woomera L/Bow 66" 73# @ 28"

Mate, that woomera longbow might be a good deal, but i wouldn't recommend such a high draw weight bow for a beginning trad bower, especially with a 30in+ drawlength.

I think the ones that patch sells are actually only $235.00 plus postage

cheers,
Pete F

A direct quote from Csaba Grozier <arguably worlds LEADING crafter of horsebows>.

"60 pound bow is for old woman or girl".

The longbows <real> on the Mary Rose varied in weight from 130 pounds to 180 pounds. NO LETOFF.

You blokes sell yourself short. I have a 120 pound longbow on order. I am 5' 11" tall and EASILY pull 85 pounds on my current longbow.

might take a bit of work for some people to get up to that weight but whats a couple of months (max) when he is going to be spending the same amount of time learning to shoot it accurately anyway? Is there a time limit to when he can manage it easily? You are overbowed when you are too weak to draw the bow, the bow isn't too heavy at all! it is what it is. :P (excuse this bit.... compound pulling wooses  ) anyway enough of my sarcastic rant, no offense meant to anyone and I am surely no expert archer

I'm with you tracker, my new bow is a woomera 110# at 32 ( I think as the scales at Archery Mart only go to 100# so we guestimated), also shot a 100#@32 woomera and do they spit arrows! don't stack badly out to 32inch draw, though they are 72 inch versions.

If I am not wrong Dr Ashby was using a 83# longbow in his tests and still didn't get pass throughs on the buffalo - needs to go up poundage and get heavier arrows :D

Old Derelict says he shoots a 90# for hunting. Hill shot 75# to 85# (and up to 125#I hear) and we are all novices in comparison eh.

i don't wanna start another **** fight or fuel the one thats already going, but by all means give axe's bow a try, but if you over-bow yourself too early you will get into bad form. and once the damage is done, its extremely hard to correct.

I have heard conflicting views on the woomera longbows. But a bow thats not recommended to draw past 28', may not be good at 31'.

Whats the conflicting views
i've only read on OZbow or this site. some time back. maybe one of the other members will answer.

It might be alright for him, as was said, best to let him have a shoot of it first though.

Yeah but whats wrong with the Bows...... :!:I for one dont recommend anyone shoot a Bow that is to much Bow for them ,but what your implying to is that there is a problem with the Bows- just was wondering what :?: :)

Pete

a while back when i was lookin at buying one i was told: good speed but stack like a pr**k and hand shock, have a tendency to break..

but as i said, i have only been told this. I havn't shot a woomera longbow yet, so i dont know. :!:

valhalla

Im quiet sure if there was a problem it would be replaced :!: and as for Stacking the key is getting a Bow with the correct draw length so stacking isnt a problem,i have a set of limbs John made on a Crossbow and have had it for Approx 7 years and have not had a problem with the Laminations :D it has been fired heapsss...... :P :P

Thanks for your input fellas. I love the 'healthy discussions' that can come about on any topic, even in the classifieds

Im 6'3" and just under 90kg's and 30 yrs old. I consider myself to be well and truly strong enough for Axe's bow (even if i have been seen in a dress  ). Im a bit concerned about what you said Pete about it not being ideal to draw beyond 28" .

I was shooting one of Patch's bows on the weekend and i really enjoyed it but if, for a few extra bucks, i can get a better quality and more powerful bow then perhaps i should..

Hmm decisions decisions .

Cheers, Cam

Again thanx for all the input.

Cam,
I'll tell you why mate. I have 1 30inch draw, and when i was shopping for a new tradbow, i found it hard to find one that 1, was still under warranty when overdrawn past 28', and 2. would be nice and smooth and at the weight i wanted at my draw.
I have also seen people buy bows with too heavy draw weight when they start, and they end up getting shoulder damage.

Pete :)

Cam, I agree with Pete, on be careful, with what you do.

adam
18-06-05, 12:21 PM
Its just a longbow, if he draws it and shoots it well then whats the problem. The same crap was said about a 72# Banshee Warrigal that I brought, there famous for breaking, no warranty when draw past 28inch, blah blah. I brought it and hunted with it for heaps and drew it out to 30 inches now tracker shoots it and draws it to who knows what length. How can yo ugo wrong when you can try before you buy.

The fact of this whole matter is that a guy is trying to sell a bow and it was jumped by rubbishing his bow. I'd be offended too. Its happened before. I would much prefer to purchase a bow made by a bowyer then one pushed out of a factory.

barebow

Strewth what a ***** session about someone buying a bow.I use to shoot a 68lb Woomera before I hurt my back and I took some reasonable pigs and goats with it.A mate at Goondiwindi has it now and we have never had a problem with it.

If that is what you want ,BUY IT,you are the one that has to be happy with it.

Cam I own a womera and draw 30&1/2 inches, it does'nt stack, no hand shock and is a very very sweet bow. i shot a $1500 checkmate L/B same poundage on tuesday and would have mine ANY day over that

"****fight"?? depends on ones interpretation :o Anyway relax Adam the "discussions" are over & most of the conversation between Pete & myself has been removed, by ourselves :) !

But at the end of the day we are entitled to have a "****fight" as much as all the aothers that have been on here. Tell ya one thing though, very noticeable how some people, people I thought a bit of, have buried their heads and avoided me since this started, not to do with this, with other threads :o :?

So.... I am pleased that Pete and I have had our little discussions, sorted out the **** from the clay with regard to those that a worth talk'n to :D

OK I'm relaxed, I know petes a good guy and you, we all blow our tops now and then and say things we shouldn't, end off the day we are all big boyz. Coach and myself have a good screaming match on a regular basis but are good mates at the end off the day. I thought it was a **** fight but I've been wrong before
