I finally got to take some photos of the first knife I made.

For those that may be interested in the spec.

The knife is a 3.5inch blade drop point - hollow ground
Steel is RWL34 – which is a Swedish stainless steel
Heat treated to 57 RW with a cryo treatment buy Hills Heat treating in Vic.
Handle is Bull Oak from the NSW Rice growing area.
Sheath is 2.5mm vegetable tanned cow hide which I died black with a home made steelwool & vinegar die.

Great job mate. :D
I like the RWL steel, it takes a great edge and is very rust resistant. I assume you bought it from Keith?

Thanks for your comments Jindy & Timbo.

Jindy, yes I did get it from Keith, & what nice guy to deal with.

You have to love that RWL, as you said great edge and rust resistance & it is also just so nice to work with in the annealed state.

I have another couple of bladed all polished up just awaiting handles will post once all done. It could be a while as I have just moved from Sydney to Armidale.

All the best
Sundowner.

Hi brandon002

Keith that Jindy and I are referring to is Keith from Australian Knifemaking Supplies in WA. tel. 08 95727 255. He imports and sells the RWL 34 steel bar stock that I used to make this knife + all the other bits & pieces you require to make your own knifes.

Sundowner, I love your handle shape. Simple and subtle but very comfortable. The knife I made last year has a similar handle shape. I originally designed mine thinking it would suit my hand when I used a full palmed grip but discovered that the indents leading down to the curve for the index finger also make it great for finer skinning work because your thumb and middle finger can sit comfortably on the sides and your index finger can guide and push from the back.

Top stuff!

Jono.
