Apologies for a kind of mixed hunting yarn.

Snowy1 and I went for a drive this afternoon to explore some forest near home where I had heard that a fallow deer or two were poking about.

We planned the mission and decided to include some vermin control if we could. I threw in the bow and my predator caller, and snow took his 22 hornet for foxy that wouldnt come in to bow range.

We had our two sons with us, the 9yo wildmen of the bush   anyway we drove into the forest and stopped off at a few likely spots around the billabongs scouting for deer sign, it was pretty sparse, clearly this area is not what you would call over run. Anyway we decided to do some fox whistling, and set our selves up under some shady trees.

The first series of calls with the predator had a fox tearing in to me, he ran to approx 20 meters and stopped staring straight at me.......I slowly drew the bow and took aim at his chest, released and watched my arrow whip past his neck, missing him by <1inch.......after pacing it later he was actually about 15 meters and I think thats why I over shot. I cant tell you how disappointed I was, it should have been such an easy shot! He ran off at a million miles an hour unscathed. We looked over and coming in from the side was another fox he was a bit cagier and was peering at us from the relative safety of some windfall timber.

I did my best to sucker him in with the caller but he wasnt having any of that so I motioned to snowy where he was and snowy stepped up and let him have it with the hornet.........scratch one chook killer, still not with my bow tho

We continued our exploring and found some very promising deer sign, definately worth a return trip. The terrorists had become a little bored with the fox whistling caper, after a promising start the yield wasnt high enough and they were getting pretty roudy when waiting, so we abandoned the calling and drove on to get a better feel for the geography and what should we find........2 spotty deer standing by the track waiting for us to go past, funny but when we stopped the car they didnt want to stand for the photo's

Anyways, hope to have a pic or two to grace the page soon. I spent several minutes watching 2 Sambar does last week completely undisturbed and in easy bow range......... I just didnt have the bow  It is going to happen!
