Hi all,

whilst out scouting the other morning i heard a Fallow buck grunting in a heavily wooded area.

I was hoping to lure him out into the open with some doe calls but didn't know exactly the noise to simulate. I have read Jindy describe them as goose like...

Does anyone know of a recorded fallow doe call out there on the www?

Also, i heard some barks from 80m or so away. I'm pretty sure these where deer barks, but i'm unsure as to why they would be sounding off (we where well concealed down wind and making minimal noise). would these just be communication barks and not alarm signals??

thanks guys, bring on the season (only 9 more sleeps) :P

Hi James...If you do a search in here I am sure this subject was broached only a few weeks ago and I think there are some links to what you are after...

try burping the bucks in  , it may sound stupid but i tryed it last year and had one come into about 25yds.

normally when a deer barks its because its sensed danger.
if you hear them bark you know you've been busted

has anyone ever tried recording the noise onto a cd and using a small cd player to blast out the sound and bring them in that way? Just a thought but i can't see why it wouldnt work. Has anyone tried this?

I have been thinking the same thing but it is hard to get recordings
up this way so if anyone has some deer sounds recordings of red stags and does and fallow bucks and does that can be put on the site for others to use I think this would be helpful to other hunters

thanks paul

I could find buck grunts but no fallow doe calls on the web. If anyone knows where to look i would be grateful too, otherwise as Jindy knows the sound, we might have to pressure him to step up to the microphone and record his best imitation for us.

Can you store sounds on photobucket?

My MP3 player can record and I can make the sounds (or at least a passable imitation) and I can get them onto my computer, but I don't know how you guys could listen to them

I have grunted two bucks to within 5 meters, one I shot the other came in so fast I didn't have time to draw my bow :( and have burped another two to within 40 meters.
I know Maxy had good success with doe calls last year and I will be giving this a go this rut.
You should be able to hear them grunting and you just try and burp back the same, hope that helps :)

Email them to me Jindy and I'll see what I can do with 'em.

Yeah, both Paul (my bro) and i had success last year on the fallow with doe calls - if anything they sound a bit like an elk doe calling (maybe you've seen them on the Yanky vids?) but maybe not quiet as draw out.

I have a bit of vid of me doe calling and a stags reaction, i will try and get this photobucket video thing happening tonight.

Nice one maxxy,

would be very interested in seeing that one!!

I'm looking for both a Fallow doe call and a Fallow fawn (want to harvest doe for venison).... But hey, a buck would be fantastic also!

Great vid Maxy :D

I uploaded a sound file.

The first half is a caller I made from a childrens toy and the second half is just me calling. I have had bucks respond to both, the younger they are the more keen they are. You don't have to do them very loud either, the bucks are listening out for them :D

Thank you for going to the trouble of sharing those sounds and info with us Maxy and Jindy. :D
For those of us who didn't know what a doe sounded like, it was great to hear. Absolutely brilliant.

I reckon!
Jindy's, being in mpeg format, i will be able to load into my phone and practice while i am out hunting, or just try to play it straight from my phone, seeing it doesn't have to be real loud.

thanks again guys, i feel it might have just given me one more option before i take on the fallow this rut.

If you want to use that sound on an electronic caller you will need to edit it so they are single sounds. Unless there are a mob of does calling you only hear it in single calls, well spaced (mostly). Time spent scouting is never wasted and if you get the chance to watch a mob of does for a while take it. You will hear the noises quite clearly when ever one or two does move away from the mob. They seem to be a comfort thing with them.

I have seen them being used like a "friend or foe" test too. The does can handle quite a bit of noise near them if they are in a mob and when they make a lot of noise (breaking sticks and things), and the source of the noise isn't visible, you will often see the call being given as a challenge, if they get a call back they settle down straight away, if they don't they all seem to switch on the radar.

There is quite a bit of variation in the calls too. I don't know whether it is like seperate "words" (for want of a better description) or if it is like different "voices". I have also had does try to sneak around on their own while making the call really quietly like they are looking for friends. I suspect (but haven't tried) that if you were to call back VERY quietly they might just come straight over.

There has been some work done in the last couple of years to figure out if the buck grunts have deeper meaning. The guys doing the work have found that the grunts of the bucks have characteristics that are specific to the deer and are like a "voice", so does know that if you make a call (buck grunt) you are not any of the guys she is used to hanging out with. The study didn't look at the doe calls so we are still pretty much guessing in that regard.

Anyway, I hope all this helps you :)

Thanks Jindy,
Fantastic stuff.

The property i will be hunting actually has a paddock/pen of does owned by the ADA on it. I will spend a bit of time watching them and listening to them, before i head out into the free range of the rest of the property. The bonus of having the pen of does there is that they might attract a few amorous bucks, as it will be a week or two before the rut starts properly.

I will go a few hundred metres away from the fence and maybe if all else fails use a doe call to see if i can get a buck fooled into thinking that one of them got out, etc....

I have to be a good distance from any fence to claim any animal taken with TT.

Just got back from the shops. Picked up a pair of mobile mp3 player speakers (AA powered) for $18.00. Bargain. They fold up nice and small and pump out plenty of sound... should be great for bringing in the foxes and other beasties
