I took this billy from a herd of decent males on the weekend. I decided to take him specifically because of his tight twisted swept back horns, which I do not like, and do not want to see in future maturing goats from this heard.
Does anyone else take this approach when assessing potential targets from your regular hunting ground herds?

PS- the stalk itself was great, taking about 1.5hrs to get into range on this guy in the middle of a heard of 40 goats with scattered cover. The shot sucked as I tried to nail him while he was on the move (he would not stop chasing this nanny). Things would still have worked out OK with a quick follow up shot, but the herd was unexpectedly spooked by a neighbours car. They all bolted including the poorly hit black billy. Luckily enough the .243 was in the car where my mates were watching the action. He was stopped in his tracks without any further delay. A good hunt completed with a disappointing ending. A valuable lesson learnt (never release on a moving target) and a substandard gene supplier deleted from the herd.

Congrats on the goat.
Long ago on a leased property we were instructed to shoot at least 1 spiker whitetail as people believe once a spiker always a spiker. The property owner was trying to build up the quality of the herd.

I also read an article about a spiker deer that was going to be culled in the USA, but left alone, the next 4 years he threw huge antlers, over 200 points. Cant always judge a book as they say. I say, well done for taking the time and effort to improve your goat herds genetics. It will pay off in the future. Howie

Well done on the hunt :D

I rekon if you can keep a close eye/control on your game then you are doing very well. 8) :D

Mmmm Hard one mate! Depends how old he is. I have been keeping an eye on a goat over the last 4 years that looks just like that fella. When we first saw him he was about the same size. Now he is getting quite impressive. If he keeps growing the way he is he will be a worthy animal to have around as a genetics carrier.

I think goats like that are very impressive when aloud to reach a good age. He looks fairly young it wouldn't of been much longer before he started to grow a thick set bases which would start to carry through the rest of his horn length.Usally starts at around the 28 to 30 inch mark .

When I saw your goat I straight away thought of a guy that shot a BIG billy that looked like your goat but yours was the smaller version, the BIG billy would have gone atleast 120-130 plus
(more than likely!!) :)

The billy could have brought some interesting varitety to the mob/s you hunt 8)

But its still good that you were able to persist and get the goat that you didnt want in the mob, out of it :P :!:

Saberhunter,

the leg is up in front of the number plate cause i had hitched the hock over the tow bar to drag him into pig territory to feed the depleated pig stocks....

i guess its up to personel preferencr mate because i love the look of those horns...

i do however think it shows great stalking skills on your behalf to be able to dodge the glances of such a large mob in order to get the goat you wished for...

I dont beleive the once a spiker always a spiker theory myself. The property owner did so it was all that mattered at the time. Do people beleive it with the deer here?

Nice. Over here all of our hunting seasons are done except for hogs. I may have to go and shoot two or three for the freezer and for pictures to post. congrats and I am jealous!

This is a more representative head of what is typical of horns on my property. This guy went 30 inches from memory (not great but not bad). When these guys live through they turn into some really nice big heads.

Like this-

He would have gone 38 inches had he not had the broken horn. He went 34 inches instead.

Thanks for your congrats on the stalk. It wasn't all that difficult given the billies were more interested in chasing nannies and nannies were more interested in running away from the billies.... It took over an hour to get into range for the shot (23m).
