View Full Version : morning fallow
I went out for a bit of a walk this morning to see if I could get onto one of the bucks I have been watching lately, I saw them at the top of the ridge but a swirling wind made it too hard to get in on them so I decided to leave them untill the weekend.
On the way back to the car I came across a doe feeding in a gully, I got into 40 meters and let fly, hitting her high in the lungs and dropping her in no time at all.
I was pretty stoked to take her for some meat.
Looking forward to chasing the bucks tomorrow :D

Well done Drew. All that meat means energy for chasing the big fellas. Here's hoping you nail one of the big bucks this weekend. Your time is due for the effort you put in.

Nice one, well done.I am off this arvo for the weekend checking some fallow out.
I normally take the skin, but this time I just took a piece of skin for a mate who was going to use it for fly tying and I just took the meat.
Shane, if you get the right one they can be very tasty, but I would rate them just slightly better than the rusa. I will bring you some down in a month or two if you are keen, let me know :)

beautiful deer mate, what size freeze (litres) would you need for a deer that size?

Thats a nice doe you got - plenty of venison on her...
Obviously I'm not asking your hunting ground - just wondering if it is one of the declared forests or private property around ACT?
Well done mate! Great pic!

Mozza is too busy hunting today so maybe I can help.
Average weights of meat from a fallow doe of that size (full grown, maybe 3 or 4 years old)
Loin, including tenderloin = 1.5kg per side (includes dags that become mince)
Back legs = 2.5kg per side + shanks (for mince or roast)
Front legs = 1.5kg per side including blade bone
Rib and neck meat for mince = 2kg
This gives you an average of about 13kg of meat from each doe. It can be more if it is a big black one or a Meso and it can be less if the doe is younger or in bad condition (the range in adult sizes of fallow does is from around 30kg to 50 kg live weight).

private property nowhere near ACT

Good stuff Mozza.Top shot
really well done mozza, i want to go get one now!

She looks like an old girl by the size of her body/head. Shame about the skin, its a pearla. Any deer with the bow is an achievement. Keep the photos coming. Howie
Well done Mozza, hope you nail a big one.

Thanks Jindy for the reply, I was curious whether it was in or near the ACT as Goshawk and I saw a young deer a few months back whilst chasing some bunnies.
Has anyone else seen deer in/near the ACT?
