gday all,
anyone out there got gortex jackets/suits as I need to know which product is the best to re-proof (water proof) a gortex garment I have had for a while. I tried a spray on type which you then throw in a hot drier to seal it but it dosn't seem as effective as the original waterproofing that the garment was treated with :? in that I mean it soaks in and doesn't bead water like it used too :?

A hot iron can fix the beading problem right up. It gets rid of all the little hairs that are holding the water and allowing it to soak in. I have an old Wilderness Equipment goretex jacket that gets an iron every 5 years or so and it is working well after 20 years of use (even if some of the fittings are cactus)

With Goretex you also have to be careful what treatment you add to the material as you can stop the wicking ability of the material (wicking is the materials ability to draw moisture such as sweat outwards while preventing the inwards flow)

If you seal the Goretex with some product it might stop the wicking and make you just as wet with your own sweat as if you had no coat on at all.

The ironing sound good, but could be an issue if you have already applied some kind of treatment - might turn your goretex into tarp.
