Couldnt get the links to work, but if its about peta members dumping animals in a garbage bin i read it last night. Animal over population aye? What about the over population of ferals in our great country? But they still say hunting them is wrong. Its quite a large load of crap if you ask me.

I saw on the news that Dr Hugh Wirth of th RSPCA was copping alot of harrassment from the animal activists. he though its so bad he had to hire a bodyguard. I had to laugh at the irony.

I seen an add last night for some animal rights group, with all the cute orangutans to get us all sappy and donate to there cause, they show all the cute stuff, what we need is an add for feral hunting, showing pigs tearing up the land, or goats eating everything they come across, or cats and fox's eating native wildlife, even if its just to give people the other side of the story, as far as t.v goes its a very one sided affair. I'm all for treating animals ethically, not chaining up monkeys etc, but there has to be a line.

Cheers Paul

That is interesting Pete, Hugh Worth is a paid up member of Animal liberation and recieved their highest award (worldwide) last year for his work for their cause.
Maybe he released that story himself in order to re-invent himself for some reason???

RSPCA chief defiant amid death fears
By Jesse Hogan
June 17, 2005 - 12:07PM

RSPCA president Hugh Wirth says he will not bow to animal activist demands to quit, despite fears activists might use violence against him or even threaten his life.

Dr Wirth is now accompanied by security guards to all RSPCA events, after he was doused with red paint by Animal Liberation Victoria members at an RSPCA fund-raiser last October.

"Police and other security firms have told the chief executive of the RSPCA in no uncertain terms that the next attack on me will not be limited to paint," he told theage.com.au.

"The difficulty is that you don't know when other hotheads are going to do something physically to me that may even end up costing me my life or certainly some grave injury."

Animal Liberation Victoria president Patty Mark said the people who threw the paint were members of their 'rescue team' who had gathered evidence of apparent cruelty at chicken farms.

She said they were unhappy that Dr Wirth refused to consider the evidence.

"I think they were frustrated because they knew that night he would be sitting there chewing on the bones of those abused animals," she said.

AdvertisementMs Mark said Animal Liberation Victoria had a non-violent philosophy, and that its members would "definitely not" use paint in their protests in the future.

"There's no way we would cause harm to any living thing, humans included," she said.

But Ms Mark called for the RSPCA to be stripped of its status as the only organisation in Victoria which can prosecute people and businesses for animal cruelty.

She said its commercial endorsement of chicken and pig farms - it has lent its logo to egg and meat sellers - was completely unacceptable.

"Why should they have this heavy responsibility on their shoulders when they've failed to do it? It should be a police matter," she said.

"Hugh Wirth is the RSPCA . . . he virtually rules the roost, so I feel he's the main one who has to answer for this."

But Dr Wirth, who has been a veterinarian for 42 years and has headed the RSPCA since 1972, defended its move to support selected meat products.

"By endorsing humanely produced eggs and by endorsing humanely produced pork products, you're asking the consumer to choose between intensively farmed pig and chook products, or humanely produced products in those areas," he said.

"We're harnessing consumer power, and it's worked spectacularly in the United Kingdom and it's going to work here."

Dr Wirth, who is also president of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, said he was a passionate carer of animals, and was unconcerned by criticism from groups like Animal Liberation Victoria.

"I take this all with a grain of salt because I know who it's coming from. Because I've been an outspoken president of the RSPCA, and I've been a fairly outspoken champion of behalf of animals, they see me as a barrier to gaining their political objectives," he said.

"It would be an entirely different thing if members of the Australian community who normally support the RSPCA accuse me of the same things, then I'd be concerned and would have to consider my position."

Ms Mark, who will face court next week on trespass charges relating to an Animal Liberation Victoria raid on a battery-hen egg factory, said their non-violent protests against Dr Wirth would continue.
