View Full Version : Home made broadhead butt...
I know it's been done to death somewhat, but what can be used that effectively can be used as a butt for broadheads/fieldpoints :?:
I've been around to look for cheap boogie boards (the cheapest is about $17 bucks each) and or Clark rubber who's prices are pretty poo also...
Is it just worth blowing $200 on a 'real' butt, or can soemthing be made cheaper and still be effective/long-lived/portable :?: :?:
Hey Rory, i've used a few broadhead butts in the past, I can't justify a $200 butt personally, though I have been looking into 3d deer targets of late  .
Anyways used big blocks of foam sometimes builders through them out, used tightly packed layers of cardboard, used clip together yoga matts around $16 for 6 a dozen will do the trick, the best target I've had yet was off cuts of high density foam from airconditional unit packing. You could ask around at the companys that install them for any packing foam. All these targets work well with pulling heads up and pulling them out.

mate check with rob at casino archery
there is a new target butt on the market going for 100 to 110 bucks
looks as good as the block
saw it last week, looks good
just a thought
pat :)
A hundred bucks to shoot b'heads into and cut up is still pretty steep IMO  ;)
I'm way to tight (ok, I've admitted it ) to buy a target, I reckon like Adam suggests - asking around for discarded foam blocks from packing materials etc. Most of the time people are only too happy for you to take what to them is rubbish and lighten them of the bother with having to deal with it :P

Are we talkin styrofoam :?:
Our mate Darryl Bulgar gives the Rubber FX a good review in the lastest Bowhunting Downunder Magazine, $130 to $150 dollars, might save you a heap of time and looking.
Adam
BIG blocks will work but it's not self "healing" and shoots out very quickly.
A more foamy or rubbery type material is better.
If you can, have a look at the commercial ones and see if you can find the same stuff for nix ;)
Esky manufacturers might be a go :P

styrofoam from the builders mate, seen it in 100mm thick by like 4meters by 4meters before, they sometimes use it for light form work.
But the stuff around computer packing, airconditioners is like a high density rubber foam

even get hold of 2nd s surf board blanks, works well .
personally if u have ur bow tuned,u only need to test a few broadheads and rest of time just use field points..
i find the portable blocks handy to take away on hunting trips to practice with.
as always jmho

Pat, Is the rubber fx what you were talking about, it looks pretty good on paper.

I have a Carbon 6 Shooter that I got from the States a couple of years ago.
Only use it for B/head tuning now, and made another target out of Structa Floor, shadecloth and filled with plastic wrap.
This one is great for field points with both the Outback and the Samick.
It's 1.2 x 1.2 mtr in size and I put wheels on the bottom of it to move it around my yard.

Try having a look at your local dump recycling centre, the guy down mine is always on the lookout for boogie boards and the archers are the main buyers.Go for the foam rubber ones because they dont tend to break appart as much as the styrofoam type.Hope this helps..Frank.
I use the same as Frank...4 larger boards cut in half work well, mine has been shot heaps for 18months but is now starting to show signs of needing a renovation...
I shelled out the money for one of the square shaped australian made targets, ( I wont mention the brand) and in my opinion and others, they aren't worth a pinch of ----. I am lucky to live on a couple of acres and built myself a large sand target. No struggling to pull arrows, field or b'heads out. My other target is a wool pack filled with material, it has lasted thousands of shots, just replace the pack. Good luck Howie

Here is my home made target, I used to have a block and thought it would be easy to make so this is what I came up withhttp://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g149/GlennMac/Picture081.jpg
Top target Glennmac, were did you source the materials and what did it set you back.
Adam
I've seen that before GlennMac, you've done very well. Though I rekon on the portability front it'd leave a little to be desired
BTW - I found some of those rubbery foam big jigsaw peices things that little kids play with/can be made into a play mat. I'm gonna tape it all up and see how that goes :D

Got the poly cell through my brother he works at a aluminium window factory and they use it for a protection wrap. Payed about $100 and that was on the cheap so if you didn't know someone it probably would not be cost affective. It is a good size though 800mm x 800 mm. Being so big you can spread your shots around so it doesn't wear so bad.

Try your local garbage tip you can usually pick up second hand boogie boards for about $2 to $5 buy a couple of them and tie them together and you have a butt for broadheads and field points. Thats what a few of the guys at our club have done, just a suggestion.

In true hillbilly style, I've used the following for broadhead targets:
1. phone books - two books, taped together and "stood up" vertically, not stacked
2. Reject shop boogie boards - one usually lasts for a while - contingent upon how frequently it's used
3. Several 50cm square pieces of cardboard/styrofoam taped togethers
4. My favorite -a big pile of sand with a target in front of it
