Just seeing if anyone has started there roar early on the Red deer in the valley this year yet. I went out yesterday for a scout, seeing a couple of small spikers & a heap of hinds. Have not heard any really giving a roar as yet, just the odd croack & grunt. Has anyone else head them starting yet in there area? I know it's early & the full moon is not until the end of the month, just curiuos. I am heading out at the end of next week for a week or so.

Pat, the place is coming along real good. Will be cladding the inside of the donga on the 18th March & going for a walk as well while i am there. The place is coming along well, taken a lot of effort from a lot of people to get it where it is. will post some pics when i get a chance.

hope to catch up
I went for a little walk this morning and missed a chance at a spiker when the stalk was blown by a hiding doe on look out.I had forgotten how steep these hills are in the Bris Valley. The stags made no sound and the spiker was still in velvet so mabey they are a bit late this year.Nill result but looking good for the roar as this is a new property and it looks like I got an invite back in a few weeks.(He is a rifle shooter and thinks bows are "kind of funny" so not much of a threat. :D The stalking prowess I showed today did nothing to change this either. :(
Anyway it was a good prep for a weeks Chital hunting starting next weekend. :P

Had these sent to me this morning from our hunting block up the valley. Should be another good year. Still a little early & it's a bit warm, althogh the big mature stags should have rubbed out by now. The one on the right is a rusa stag, that has already been damaged, he will be a cull.

Quick question on the guys hunting Reds in the Brisbane Valley.
Do you think hunting from the 20th of April to be too late for the roar.

Mick,
I hunted last year from the start of March through to May. They where very vocal for the first week of April than died off in about 10 days. The full moon is at the end of this month & it generally brings them on, but the weather is bloody hot. I know if there is a good frost during this period it gets them going as well. As for too late, i would say no myself. It's like any hunting as you know yourself, the more time & effort the more chance of rewards. Who nows when they come on to full roar, every year has been different for the last few years. Best of luck if you are chasing them anyway.
Grunter
Correct me if I'm wrong but they are all Rusa stags.......
Reds tower over Rusa and all the deer in that picture are the same height and they all have Rusa shaped antler formations, i.e. no Bey, Trey or tops, only brows and inners and outer tines on these guys, or is there a picture missing?
Was thinking there must have been another picture Pete.
Otherwise have to agree that there rusa as far as the picture tells.
Adam
My thoughts also but pictures can be decieving

Sorry boys that was a typo, you both get a cigar, they are in fact all Rusa stags.

Thanks Grunter
I got a place for this year, my brother in law has a solicitor mate who owns about 3500 acres and I have permission to hunt his place and all the surrounding properties....They took a 6x7 off there last year and he said there is another 6x6 in the area that they have been seeing so I'll give anything a go once. get some practice in before heading over to NZ after them.
Mick
you both get a cigar No just make sure you post plenty of photos after your hunt :D

Will certainly have some photo's for this year, not 100% on the game taken. But will be trying to catch video footage this year as well. I have about 9 hrs of footage that has to be edited for a better quality to watch. There is some colourful language & just plain crap video captured.
Mick, best of luck to you.
Grunter
Great pics guys.
Kim what bow is that? Is it a Samick Deer slayer?
Its a Robertson but if I am lucky I might get a Samick again one day. :D

Well got back tonight from a few days up at the block for a pre-Roar scout. Well not a lot to report back as far as the Reds in the valley in my area.. They are still pretty quiet around our way at the moment. They are there but all hiding from me. Took a few pics from the last couple of days with a few of the update on the "Hunting Hut". I will let the pics do the talking, sorry for putting a few on but i thought it might interest a few. When i work out how to get video footage from my cameras to computer to here i will post it as well.
Patrol ready & packed to roll.

Chased a few stags yesterday stalked 4 in total saw about 8 had a shot at a cull stag over estemated the distance **** happens. The stags are roaring on my block but not full on yet saw a good double 5 palmated on one side and wide enough to drive a truck through, the wind was real bad though very strong SE wind sucking and blowing all over the place. It was a fun morning though stags shut up at 8.40 on the dot not a peep after all the best everyone else.
I was out again this morning before light and not a peep at all.Saw heaps of rub trees and some tracks but not what was making them.Going to camp on the block this Fri and Sat so mabey then. Its so much drier this year over other years and not much water laying around for the deer to drink.
Cheers KIM
Sounds like a action packed hunt frogman, and the big fella sounds like a tank. All the best on em mate.

Went out again yesterday to my newly aquired block to have a little bit of a look around. Seen 4 hinds & a couple of spikes nothingg real luring. Found a few rubs & bedding area. Basically was just checking this place out as it's only the second time i had been here. Went on Friday for couple hours just to get the rundown on the place by owner. Looks like a lot of potential all the same, pitty i am going back to work for a month  Suppose i have to pay for my passion somehow.

Yes adam heaps of fun,i dont think they have really got into it yet i saw many small stags with hinds so the big guys arnt that interested yet,i would say this week with the full moon.Rub trees are very minimal in my area?????? no wallows, but no water either.
Went out this weekend nothing roaring at first light managed to take a small 2x3 stag off a wallow around 7am stags started roaring around 7-7:30 after I gave a few roars. Hind called a nice 4x5 stag into about 20 metres of my mate positioned down the ridge from me unfortunately his shot passed just under his chest. Stalked a few other stags for the weekend the best being a 4x4 I got into 10 metres of him at around 5pm saturday arvo and watched him thrash the same small ironbark sappling for over 40 minutes. Will go out again on wednesday morning then its off to my fallow block for 3-4 days.
Good Luck to all.
Gavin.

I can assure you these are no where near Cressbrook or farmed. I know exactly what your saying there, as my inlaws live right beside Cressbrook. Being a local yourself you are aware of the stuff that goes on out that way with some of the trash getting around that place. These buggers are hard work like the rest of the deer species. I will be giving it a good hard effort mate.
