hello, i do allot of practicing of archery, to make sure that my shot does the damage when it counts, but i usually use hay bales, which end up disintegrating. I was wondering if any one knew how to make a good target that wont fall apart, or is to hard to bend arrows.
(i would have posted this is the build alongs section but it seems that only moderators can post there)
Check this thread out :P

Cheapest target Ive ever made and still use is as follows.
1- Red white and blue colored zippered beach bag sold at Crazy Clark
5 pillows purchased from lifeline.
1 cardboard box to fit snuggly inside the Crazy Clark bag.
4 pieces of sticky tape.
1 target face.
Line the inside of the bag with the cardboard.
Lie the pillows inside the bag. If you dont have to squish them to put the top piece of cardboard in and zip the bag closed then add more pillows until you do.
Tape the target face to the target and have fun.
I have to change the bag and cardboard about once a year or so but am still on the original pillows.
Pull the arrows out with 2 fingers and stops arrows out of my 70lb XT at 5 yards. I wouldnt reccomend shooting broadheads at it.
Dont leave it out in the rain.

I've found a sweet little butt that actually comes up, and works just like the real deal 8)
I havn't shot the hell outta it yet, but after maybe 40 or so shots it's going tops :D Broadheads, field points.... :D
I got 2 'lots' of those kids jigsaw peice shaped rubber-foam mats from Reject Shop. $10 each, 15 double width peices in each. Taped em both together neatly.
Result is neat, doesn't leave crap everywhere or disintergrate, light to carry, and pulls up broadheads really well with easy removal after screwing the head off 8)

I think the "Homeless persons bag" idea is a good one. To go with that, I reckon shrinkwrap would be good as well. You can get it from any business that gets pallets of gear. I got some last year from Mitre 10.

a big bag of sand, just keep rebagging it,or make a backing to keep it in.
couple of surfboard blanks,2nds from the surfboard makers
bag of off cut wet suits material
buy the new red zone target blocks for 110.00

I use pallet wrap stuffed in a carboard box, with an old cot mattress rolled up behind it all wrapped several times over in pallet wrap to seal it.
It's great, arrows pull easy too.
When the outside gets shot up, I just whip a few more layers of pallet wrap around it and it's good to go again :P

Awesome, thanx for the ideas, but what do u think about:
Lots of $4 camping mattresses from the warehouse
Stuff em into a box and tape it up?
Should work well.
I always try to find free stuff first. Call me tight but every time I picture shooting into a butt that I've paid for I imagine I may as well stuff a cardy box with money and shoot that  ;)

Just an idea for a broadhead target
Have a look at this link on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320089685564
This would give you 3 targets x 51cm x 49cm x 30cm thick at about $130 each.
You could also buy a full mattress and it would be even cheaper if a 20cm thick target would do the job.
This foam is very heavy and therefore it would have a high density which is why I think it would work as a good broadhead target. Even some what self repairing.
To give you an idea on its weight it runs at around 80kgs / cubic M. That would put the above target size (if my maths is correct) at aprox 6 kgs
What do you think?

i am sure it would be great, but its very expensive, i could buy a proper archery target that would last 10,000 shots without falling apart for a few hundred dollars. But thank you very much for letting me know

tape on a pair of antlers and stand still.
Painting a few big rings on your chest wouldn't hurt either. Along the "bummer of a birth-mark, Hal" far side cartoon line.

as i said before,u can buy a copy of the block target for 110 bucks... :)
a lot of these other target ideas are great,90% u can only use at home, cant throw in back of car and set up where ur hunting, and 50% are no good for broadhead practice....
but it whats ever floats ya boat :)

i used to make a copy of the block targets for my mates and me. is very easy to do. Luckily my uncle owns a foam manufacturing business so it was very cheap (FREE). the foam they make them in comes in a 50m roll and is a mtr high so it is time consuming to cut it up but i use to cut it into 500mmx500mm pieces then stack them together with ply ends and use the ratchit straps that you tie down trailer loads etc with. i used bandit strap which i could get from work which is the stainless steel strap you see used on power poles etc cause i could get it from work. they last a far while and the roll to buy is only 30-40 bucks i think anyway.
I just made this target butt, from 20mm form rubber sheets from Clark Rubber, they where seconds for $15ea. Then cut it into four pieces, and a set of cheap $7 twin pack ratchet straps, and woooola..

A cheap large portable butt that measures 525x525x 600 tall, that will take thousands of field points and stop as many broad heads you can give it (rotate regularly) and it easily repaired. For $127 that cannot be beat!

Best idea ive seen yet is what my best mate did made a wooden box 1000X1000X300mm carpeted the front and rear put wood on the sides made some legs for it then stuffed the inside with old rags blankets and anything he could find at tenty metres arrows will not pass all the way through with a 70 pound bow.
