Fridays hunting day for me and with my fallow property out of order due to the ewes lambing - a goat hunt was a nice fill in. The mountain breeze was all over the place, blowing one way then sucking back the other then cutting crossways. I decided to follow the creek along then cut up a valley an hunt a mob of goats feeding on the face. Getting to the creek bank another mob of goats was feeding on the fresh green pick on the river flats. I got to the waters edge and was checking the breeze when a nanny was feeding toward me thru some river boulders. The creek bank had a cut away section - similiar to a lounge chair, soft soil and grass like bedding made for a comfortable spot to sit and wait. The nanny was joined by 2 other smaller goats, the wind was steady in my face. I was wearing my 3D suit and head net. The creek gurgled away, the birds sang and the goats called to each other, very relaxing stuff. The nanny was making her way to the waters edge, slowly picking her way thru the uneven ground, head scanning back and forth, it was on one of these scans that she laid eyes onto something unusual, namely me. At 6 yards I could see her eyes blink and see her chewing grass. I got that goat stare for no less than 5 minutes and at no time did I move. I sat there smiling just thinking how cool this stand off was. Eventually her instincts kicked in and she wandered off, always checking her back trail until she disappeared over the bank. I made my way across to the last cover, the shadows of a creek side she oak and the digital rangefinder said it was 30 yards to my target. He was no monster in the horn departed but it was an enjoyable stalk so far. The billy was quartering away. B4 I continue, it was the first hunt with my wifes Ross bow, a sweet drawing, easy on the hand bow that was as accurate as you could be. I pictured where his heart would be in that triangle and the pin settled there. The arrow was away. A blood trail lead me 35 yards to my billy, a 3 blade Snuffer thru the heart has that effect. A bow that shoots so well builds confidence in oneself and ones ability when it comes to hunting or on the target line. One shot and one kill - its as good as it gets. The Ross bow is a joy to shoot and I look forward to many more Friday hunts with the wifes bow. Will post pictures when they get developed. Regards Howie

Well done Howie.

How did the Ross go for penetration being a light bow?

Howie my hunting mate Rin, shoots a Ross and is very impressed with it, they are a very good bow..was talking about getting a "Cardiac"..don't know if that's still the plan.... :D :D

The penetration was not what I am used to - my heavy bow and arrow combination, 80 pound and 900 grain arrows, punches arrows thru the animals and up the paddock. The arrow actually cut two ribs on entry, tickled up the heart and lodged in the sternum. That was using the biggest 3 blade heads I can buy, the penetration was good enough to tilt him over, but no fantastic and not a pass thru. Perhaps if I was using 2 bladers - the penetration would probaly been better, but the 3 bladers cut alot of the good stuff whilst going in. This is probaly one reason why I use heavy weight gear, so my arrows blow all the way thru. I am hopefully heading out tomorrow, (fitting in a Tuesday hunt as well) and am quite keen to do some more field testing. I think a broadside or slightly quatering away shot would be better than the acute angle that I shot my billy with. It all felt right at the time. The Ross, from my limited experience, is one fine bow and I would be happy to own one, in saying that my Hoyt ultramag shoots nice as well, (just gotta get that sssvingster warmed up b4 I shoot it). If I had a choice I would proably go up to a 70 pounder and increase the weight of my arrows - gaining better penetration. Will see what tomorrow brings. Howie

Good stuff. It's amazing how high your confidence can actually climb when you know the bow in your hand will do the trick everytime you step inside your comfortable range. I know when I cross that 40m mark, it's going to be all over in short time. That's why it pays to practice at longer ranges, so you can relax on the shots you make at shorter ranges.

Went out today, arrived at the property and had the usual hour chat with the cocky, geez they can talk. The first couple of stalks went well and I got under 10 yards of several goats in different mobs, nannies and small stuff, and although I fancied taking one for meat - my main focus was finding a decent billy. I got the drop on one billy, (about 18 yards) and drew to anchor - but he still has a couple of years and a few inches of horn to grow on each side b4 his days are up. I continued up the creek and saw my old mate, a long shaggy haired billy with horns in the 33-34 inch mark. I have seen him a couple of times now, but he has given me the slip but I intend to fix that issue, LOL. Saw another good billy that I haven't seen b4, so he's on the list as well. Time ran out today as I had to be home by 2pm to do honey jobs. No shots but a good time had by me. Pics are in the camera, will have to get one of those digital cameras. AdamK that buck is still out there, he has my name on him as well. Pig, the bow is a 31, I would like to shoot a few with longer axle to axle to make some comparisions. Will try 4 a Friday hunt as see how we go. Thanks guys Howie

If its as good as my Ross CR337 then it is truly a good bow. I have so much confidence when I shoot the Ross I find that plugging rabbits at 40m with it is not a problem. I rate them very highly and would put them up against any bow on the market I bought mine from Rob at Casino Archery, I found him a great bloke to deal with.

Howie, thanks for the story. Just curious- would you mind posting the sordid details of the model Ross, poundage, draw length and weight broadhead?
