Humphrey asked if I would like go for a hunt with him on one of his blocks on Sunday afternoon.
After arriving and gearing up we checked the wind and headed up to the ridge where we planned to travel to the far end of the block then hunt back into the wind contouring at a lower level working our way back.
Nearing the end of the track along the ridge we decided to try grunting to see if we could rouse a Fallow deer and after several calls and no response we moved on.
I was keen to hunt a gully facing the front of the block and Humphrey wanted to check out some blackberry-chocked gullies on the backside so we split up each going our own way.
Within 30m of dropping down from the ridge I picked up 3 x Sambar hinds browsing about 40m below me and the lead hind picked me up straight away, we took a good look at each other she let out a bark and trotted off down the hill while the other deer just stood there looking at her before deciding to join her. Before they were out of sight I swiftly headed back up to the ridge and got Humphrey who heard the hinds bark as he was still on the ridge track.
We dropped back into the gully and I started glassing, not being able to see any deer we headed back up to the ridge track quickly travelled back just passed where the saddle met the ridge.
Slowly we crept over so we could see into the next gully with Humphrey about 10m behind me I spotted a hind full broadside at about 20m with her head behind a tree, I squatted down signalled to Humphrey to stop slowly nocked an arrow on the curve raised the bow and started to draw when she barked and took off down the hill.
I sent Humphrey back to where we first saw them in the hope I may push them to him, I stayed where I was and waited 5min then moved forward about 2m before being a baby Sambar gave me the most pitiful squeaky bark I have ever herd
then took of down the hill.
I went and got Humphrey and we tracked them for a bit before loosing their trail so we headed back to the gully I originally wanted to hunt and sure enough the hind and calf were spotted again contouring along as before she barked and moved off, minutes later her calf let out one of her pitiful squeaky barks and we both looked at each other and had a laugh.
Another great afternoon in the Aussie bush
