Thought I'd put some pics up and a few words about todays 'Goat hunt get together' :D

RazorX (Jase), hutcho (Pete), bowhunting4eva (John), John's old man, and myself got together for a bit of a stomp through the scraggy, shale covered slopes of mid NSW after some goats.

Myself, hutcho and RazorX made the trip from the ACT planning to meet bowhunting4eva and his dad at the property. Both vehicles pulled up and after a few eager hand shakes we geared up and got walking.

First up we had to get our feet wet crossing the river and then continued along the dusty pads well worn by many a hoof.

We walked a while and after the initial chatting between keen bowhunters a silence came over us as we ducked branches looking and listening for the prey species.

A fox whistle here and there is a good idea...

After following a goat screetch up a steep hill amongst the stunted gums and rock of the landscape we sat for a well deserved breather. Trudging even higher we finally spotted 3 small goats fleeing the scene into a gully unknown. RazorX and I pushed down hill to cut off these beasties with the other boys following the direct line the 3 young'un's took.

RazorX soon spotted a good bunch of goats, billy's, nannies... the whole shooting match, so I slid down the loose sided slope and made my way up to the goats. A top billy, both horn wise and colour of hide (approx 32"/pure jet black 8) ) was above me, and he snorted loudly and turned over the crest taking a few goats with him.

Much calf busting hill running/sliding proceeded to take place  without these billies being caught up :(

Moving back along the river RazorX and I (having lost the other three blokes  ) almost ran into the next small mob that were taking it easy on the dusty pads along the muddy river's bank. Jase moved in, as did I, and with a bit of confusion (having not hunted together before) he released unbeknown to me and hit a big bodied white (with a dark mane) billy of high 20's inches angling away, burying the arrow up to the fletches. We searched, and looked for blood from a well hit animal, but we simply could not find the billy.
:(

Stumbling over rocks, I looked across the river's flood zone and saw a big bodied nannie sneaking away from our position. I jumped at the chance of hopefully blooding the Drenalin and nocked an arrow, and chased after the goat.

Well I got into a shooting lane surrounded by tee-tree and put a shaft straight through her at 30m, she went straight down, and within seconds I put another arrow through her chest just to make sure.

The dren is blooded, I'm very pleased about the whole stalk/shot
:!: :D :D

This was funny....., RazorX decided he'd have a shot at a small tussock on the walk back, (obviously to show off   ) and for some reason only aparent to the rest of the group he didn't see the dirty great river behind  ..... so he became a human monkey

Though the goat's we got were nothing spectacular it was good to meet a couple of new faces and walk the hills (my legs still ache :D ) Personally was good to change it up from the constant battle I've been having with the deer

The lads....

thought i would post peice of the group goat hunt.

after pete and i split up from jase and rory we spotted a mob of six goats standing under a tree. we went into stalk mode and climbed a steep shale lined to where we hoped the goats would be. after nearly sliding down the hill a few times we were 20 yards.
i will let pete tell you the rest as he got lucky

after going after the goats we went down to the river to see if we could find the others to see how they went. i went to check up the river about a km and decided to walk the other side back to pete and my dad. i got back and knew i would have to cross the river to get to them but i did not remember it being that wide. i waded in and it was alright and kept going although the river got considerably deeper quick and my path was the most shallow too
so it was camo's and everything all under but its what i will do for hunting. pete and dad took the moment to laugh at my misfortune.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day boys. It was awesome to meet everyone and all of you carry a wealth of knowledge with you - even John the young fella! I learned a lot in just a day!

As for Rory and his Drenalin, I think he was visited by aliens because that Mathews bow is something else  It definately wasn't built by humans that's for sure! It was awesome watching Rory take his Nanny. Thwack! The sound of a complete pass through from 30 m. The funny thing is, Rory was chasing that goat, while I was looking for my Billy in the scrub. After not finding the Billy, and thinking "I will wait for Rory", I heard a russle in the bush. I looked through the dense tee tree and saw the Nanny standing broadside to me at 30 m. I was at full draw on it when I watched an arrow explode through it like lightning, but there was no sound from a bow! I looked to my left and saw Rory nocking another arrow and knew that he had taken the Nanny with his "Alien Bow". I rushed over to him to congratulate him and watched in awe as the Drenalin spat out another arrow with no noise, which completely passed through the goat - again!

Good times! 8)

I'm dissapointed that we didn't recover the Billy, but am confident that it didn't travel far before expiring. The scrub made it too difficult to recover.

Well done to Pete for his efforts with his Billy. It was a nice goat and had a great skin :D . It was pretty funny to see the photos of Johnny boy wading up to his neck in the muddy bottomed river! Haha! That's what we do for bowhunting, along with scaling shale ridden mountains to the very top when the sun is scorching down upon our brows :?

Thanks to everyone for a great trip, and to John's Dad, thanks a million for bringing nice cold water! What a relief! Also, I hope you can get back shooting your bow soon because you seem to be the man in the right place at the right time when it comes to those Fallow Deer! Good luck with them boys.

Jase.

When Jack and I split from Rory and Jason and came across the little mob Jack mentioned, we had to move around and stalk up this snotty shale covered hill to get the wind in our face.

Just a few metres short of the peak of the hill with the goats only a few metres on the other side, the mob walks over the hill straight towards us and stopped side on at 5 metres so we froze just below them.

As I was semi hidden by the slope and a small tree they couldn't work out what I was, so I picked out a nice little white with a dusty grey coat Billy, drew back the Allegience lent out and settled the pin. Touched the trigger and bang, my hydration pack mouth piece gets caught by the string causing the arrow to flick a little too far back in the billy, and the hydration pack to want to rip through my back and join the arrow. Word of warning, make sure your hydration tubes are well out of the way. Even at that range the arrow entered the front shoulder angling to just near the back leg.

The mob took off so we waited a bit, had a quick look for the end of my hydration pack (still out there somewhere) before following an increasing blood trail.

Further up the hill we came across the Billy which had been left behind by the little mob and I got to about 20 metres where a texas heart shot was taken sending the Billy off again. He stopped about 30 metres further on but did not want to go down, so I managed to get above him and put the final arrow almost vertically down through his front shoulders.

After he rolled down the hill and broke 2 of the 3 arrows, we had a drink, took some photos and went to find the other blokes.

As this was the first goat I had taken since the early 90's I was happy with the little fella. I will post a few photos tonight (camera's at home)

He was worth the blisters on the feet! :)
