View Full Version : are these good hunting knives?
what do you guys think of these 2 knives off ebay? I want a knife for skinning and general hunting. I don't want a large blade because they are hard to handle when you are skinning game.

mate the winchester is a good knife i was looking at geting the same 1 and am still thinking at geting it and the second looks like a good skinner
Yeah the Winchester is good. The other looks like a cheaper steel.
The Winchester would hold it's edge well. That's ideally what you want in a knife.

I have these. Not very expensive and worked very well on my last hunting trip.

You would be better off waiting rather than buying one of these.
The “Winchester Gerber” is a copy of the old G96 hunting knife. I wouldn’t believe that it is worth more than $30 because they are being less than honest in their ad, they can’t be bothered telling what steel it is made of (a sure sign it isn’t top shelf for sure), they are calling it a Gerber (which it isn’t) and they are already charging you more than you can buy it for on KnivesPlus (a reputable internet trader)
http://www.knivesplus.com/winchester-knife-hunting-wn-1339.html
The second knife isn’t worth the postage. They also are less than honest when they tell you it is 440g (no such steel) and that it is “handcrafted” (it is fully CNC machined in some factory in China.
Hey Mick,
what do you reckon about Muela hunting knives?

Hey Mick,

Puk
They make some nice knives. They don't say what they use for their steel either so you only have other users opinions to base your purchase on, which can be a less than reliable way of choosing a knife.
For guys that want to keep the cost of their knife down and still want a blade that they can use to dress out their kills with you could do worse than going down to cash converters and picking up someones old swiss army knife. You can get some with a slightly longer main blade, and even models that lock open, and they are more than enough blade to dress out animals as big as red deer.
This one here was done from start to finish with a SAK

Yeah mate I'd say give gerber the flick, if it even is a gerber, that company has gone real downhill recently,
stealing designs and making less than reasonable quality knives. I'd buy their other stuff though, have a good hydration pack from them
I have a Muela skinner and I think it's sweet.
I've taken to spending $250 plus on knives these days so I don't think the Muela will ever see a hunting trip.
Knives on my list to take out.
Ontario RAT-5 - excellent knife takes a pounding (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=ONRAT5) I have abused this and it keeps coming back for more
Benchmade NRA Steigerwalt 3 Blade Skinner (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BM12700) I read in a knife mag one of the authors took it with him on a hunt
and fully processed an antelope buck
and the one I'll be carrying everywhere.....
Sebenza (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=CRKSEBLCL) the perfect folder
by the way don't buy anything of this site I linked to because shipping is minimum 30bucks US, I just use it for stock and price reference.
Hey Jindy I hear you are a maker.
Do you have a site or been published in KA?

Yes mate, I make knives. I do it in spurts and send the pics of my new knives out to people on my email list. They go pretty fast so that makes me feel pretty good about the job I do with them.
I don't have a website with my knives on them, but a lot of them are posted on here. I haven't been in KA, Ruth asked me to write an essay about myself and send it to here with some pics and I then realized that getting in the mag was really about self promotion for the knifemaker and free content for the mag so I never bothered.. It is not a business for me, it is a hobby that goes some way towards paying for itself.
Waldganger, quite a few of TBGA's members are the proud owners of Jindy's knives and I've had the opportunity to have a close look at one.
A member here, Wellsy, showed his Jindy original to me a while ago and IMO it is a real beauty. Jindy makes top quality knives which are above all else very functional and I have added one to my wish list. :D
Maybe you should add your name to Jindy's email list.

That sounds good Jindy, I plan on making knives for a hobby but the initial outlay for all the tools is a bit much at the moment (plus I live in a unit with a
shed the size of the dunny) so it's been put on the back burner for now.
Mate can you add me to your email list when you have stuff to sell?
Dzyans-Edge@hotmail.com
Can't promise I'll buy anything but I'll definately have a look.
Cheers
