View Full Version : For all who are thinking of making knife or using a grinder
Hi All
(WARNING GRAPHIC PICS)
With the amount of people making there own knifes on the up and the use of grinders in the manufacturing process, I thought that I would show you all some shocking pic on how dangerous a grinder can be, and why a pair of safety glasses just is not enough face protection.
All but one of the grinders in these photos had guards on, can you pick the photo of the one that did not have the guard on?. The guard will stop 95% of the disc from flying up at the face.

The grinder that did not have a guard on. The man is lucky to be alive but he lost the use of the eye. He was wearing safety glasses but no face shield. the site policy is compulsory face shield and glasses, as result no compensation was paid and he had to pay the medical bill.
It can and will happen maybe not the first time or the 1000 time but it could be.
Stay safe when using power tools.

You can still spin a gaurd around 360o.
Jeez im glad the shattered disc bounced off my gaurd and lodged into my head.
Seriously though, good pics Chris it will certainly stop people taking off there gaurds, and i will buy a ****ter for my knives.
I guess ive been lucky the 4 times blades have shattered on me.(Cpt obvious)
I hope people take heed, i know i am.

Hey maybe nothing but the hunters eye has spotted an inconsistency.
Top photo date is different to the calendar 13th is where the lines stopped, and the blade looks snapped not shattered? You wouldnt be pulling wool after our convo would you?
And a chipped blade on the front, cut cleenly through a Visor with no rubbers or sweat bands on it  . An extremly old or cheap visor chris you should know better. :D
Working in this industry i use a grinder every day, Always with teh guard on and always with saftey specs, I cannot understand how these disks blow up on ppl, The must not be very careful with them. It seems as if all these incidents where caused by Cutting disks? And maybey they have been stressed before use and or the user isnt using them correctly. Any idea on what size grinder they where?, I dont like using the 9" they will take your head off allright,
Maybey i should wear a face sheild aswell as saftey specs!, Those buggers can do some damage allright.
Good post mate
Hi Jimmy
Not pulling wool or anything else.
The shield in the top pic goes on a hard hat. It fits on to the brim.
It is a nice cut, just shows you how fast the move when they go bang.
Chris
I know of a bloke just out the road that copped one in the face. Nasty bit of gear and good advice Chris!

my uncle nearly fully cut through his archilis(spelling) tenden not that long ago with a angle grinder. he was on the roof cutting tiles and something went bad and his wife was mowing the lawns so she could not hear his yells. luckily the neighbours heard him.
he is an experienced sparky and now manage's 2 power stations in newcastle but it shows accidents can happen to the experienced people as well.
he is still limping

Yeah ok, what about the date :D Seems if your carefull enough to cross the day out you wouldnt miss 18 days
How did that guy cut his fingers holding the grinder incorrectly. You can only hold a grinder one way and ill be damned if i know how that happened. Please indulge us.

So what your saying is...even with the gaurd you still get bitten
I am buying a New grinder tomorrow for all interested in my fingers
The surgen, Jimmy
Thanks for the photos and the warning Chris
You cann't call an incident an accident when safety mechanisms are removed, espescially safety gaurds off power tools.
Work safe, Play safe, DRIVE SAFE

Anyone who holds a grinder loosely deserves a bite (joke)
Seen some beautys over the years, first thing i go over with my leading hands is grinder safety on the job. 9inch and the thin 1mm cutting blades leave the best marks at least. mmmmm claret.

good post Chris,
just using the old bench grinder wire buff can leave nasty injuries, I've touched one lightly a few times but my old man took a channel out of his hand with one once.
I've got a mate who was incorrectly using a angle grinder and somehow wound up running it up his hand and now its a tangled scarred mess.
Not pretty stuff at all.
