this is what I get up to on an RDO when the weather is to s#*t to go hunting.
88 layers of car coil spring(5160) and band saw blade( L6 ?) In a twist pattern. The thin brite line you can see near the plunge cuts is a cold shut. This is only my 4th crack at forge welding steel and i'm :D with the outcome.

I flaterned the coil spring out by hand at home then took all the pieces around to big Dave Myhill's place to use his power hammer.

Will see what happens after HT with the cold shuts as to weather I make it into a knife.

Great bit of work, shame about the defect, I hope it comes through the heat treat alright and you get something out of it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what are plunge cuts and what is a cold shut?

Beautiful looking steel. :D

Excuse my ignorance, but what are plunge cuts and what is a cold shut?

The plunge is the transition from the unground steel to the bevel. A cold shut is where the steels didn't weld together, whether from not enough heat or from flux or oxidation trapped there.

Thanks for the compliments fellas.

I will be sure to post pics when finished or of the twisted remains if it all goes pear shaped at H/T.

Jimmy, How is the skinner going?

Slowly, im renovating a studio apartment in town for the missus.
Have to re do the quench and finish shaping the handle. Cant believe she hasnt cracked or warped on me.
I keep putting useless photos up but maybe someone will enjoy them without giving me grief on my safety. LOL.

Good luck with yours mate hope she treats up a treat for you.
