Hi There
I make knives on a regualar basis. there is a few things you need to know before you start to make a knife .
you shonld always were a resperator to protact your lungs from the fine steel dust as well as sum of the timbers you use for the knife handles. eg cooktown iron wood will make your noise bleed. black coral will put you in hosptial. for a few days .deer horn will give you headaches and no one tells you these things .
i learnt the hard way with sum of them
stainless steels are the worse for your lungs.
one more thing always were the protective gear.

It is good to point that out, good on you Paul :)

I used to not wear my respirator, you know how it is "only going to do a little bit" and then you are putting up with head aches and black boogers.

A lot of woods will poison you, and we have all heard of what heavy metals can do to you :(
