View Full Version : aussie arrow woods
high guys - i made a post on ozbow about this but thought i'd try for some extra opinions. question: who makes their arrow shafts from scratch and what woods do you use? when i get back to oz i want to start making my own arrows with different woods, and since i have found the quality of ceder shafts to be pretty average so far (and the price) i was thinking its not a bad idea to make them from scratch from raw materials. glenn: i know you have used silver quandong in the past - is it heavy as arrow woods go? i know ash is popular and i am mostly interested in the heavier woods for use as hunting arras, what do you guys reckon is good in terms of easilly available timber from your average hardwhare store?
Silver Quandong is probably one of the best arrow timbers around, it's on thew heavier side as far as arrow woods go. If you want more weight you can foot the shafts and laminate different timbers together to get the weight and spine you want. There is no end of variations you can do with making your own shafts.
When you have made your own you probably wont want to shoot any other type of shaft including that hi-tec stuff. Even slash pine which isin't a native and hoop pine can make good shafts...Glenn...
cheers for that reply glenn. is this silver quandong pretty common at your average timber yard or hardwhare place? also what kind of basic stock do you buy it as - ie: do you get it as flat sheets or planking or what? god i miss making my own arras, ATM i am shooting ready-made carbons - good arras but someone else made them (if ya know what i mean)
It's a sought after furinture timber. There is no problem buying it down the coast as sawn timber in any size you want up to 250mm wide.
Couldn't stand the thought of putting a carbon through my bow, not after shgooting beautiful wood arrows, there is no comparsion for me...Glenn...
