View Full Version : What do you want to see in a bowhunting movie?
Hi All,
As a bowhunter who is keen on filming/putting together movies for other bowhunters to watch, i'd be interested to know what you want to see from a bowhunting movie when you buy/watch it?
Do you just want to see arrows hitting game i.e. 'the kill'? a mixture of game taken plus animals doing what they do?
Does storyline in a movie matter i.e. say broken into individual hunting trips with a fair bit or narration (a lot like most of the US movies) or just more random scenes put togeather?
Do you just want to see big game (deer pigs goats etc) footage, or do you enjoy watching small game hunting as well?
Any thoughts on these questions or anything else you want to add would be great!

I like to see everything you mentioned in ya post plus a couple more things.
1 I like to see ME in a hunting video;)
2 I like to see the arrows that miss and the bloopers:D
Alot of videos dont show the arrows that dont connect, just the ones that do. And we all know a fair few arrows never find the target.

For me Maxy, I like watching DVD's that are more like wildlife doco's with pently of wild game footage and a mixture of hunts as well.
I have watched a few Sambar hunting dvd's that are a bit like watching paint dry, with to much footage of game only (with the deer not doing much).
I think a good combination of live game footage with naration about what the game is doing and why and live hunts is good. It's always good to hear what another hunter thinks on game. Also I have found that my wife can stand these type of movies for longer.
Oh yeah Small game is good in small doses.

Maxy, I haven't seen your first movie yet (hint hint;) )so I can't comment on that one. From reading your article in the BDU mag about tips, I would like to see that sort of thing included in most productions, not too many people know how to vocally (without tools) call foxes or deer. The 'bush wise' aspects of your hunts that teach people different things could be your greatest asset. Anybody can put together a heap of kill shots, but how many can put a bit of teaching with it. For me, any game species being hunted can be entertaining, just don't make it 'Boaring'.

Hi Maxy,
I got your last video and I really enjoyed it.
What I would like to see in hunting videos is some of the following;
1. Hunt preparations- what your gear is for a hunt from; vehicle, clothing, and food prep and of cause bow equipment. Especially how this varies dependant on terrain, species and time of year of a particular hunt.
2. How you plan your attack for a particular hunt i.e. hunt high low, water points, pick up animal sign and how you use it.
3. Sound/ narration or lack there of I think is something most hunting videos can improve on.
4. All the usual good footage of bow shot game and the stalk.
And if this can be all blended in together in a story line rather than fragmented in sections, then all the better.
Cheers

I think sundowner said it pretty well for me maxy:D Though I always like more kill shots in the films like over the shoulder stuff. all the the hunting movies I've seen have their own unique appeal and differences, my favourite movies to date are clint pickings the boar war and various john teitzel productions but thats mainly because they relate directly to the style of hunting I do in the top end:D .
BEAR
2 naked chicks kissing would be nice:D!
On a serious note, I would like to see more 'How To' sections in hunting videos, i.e preparing your kill for the table, skinning & caping.
i'm with sundowner, i like seeing what you use/do and why.

Its not always just about the kill but about the good times you spend with good mates when out hunting thats what im trying to put into the movie im making.
Biggest annoyance in films I've seen is the monotone 'stunned mullet' type presentation of the hunter. I think that livening up the presentation of hunting, with information on tracking, technique, equipment etc makes the viewer feel like they are right there with you.
A great template for this is Rex Hunt and his fishing shows. He takes the time to explain the tackle, location, techniques, and how he thinks he will end up with the fish on the hook. Like others mentioned also, there is plenty of coverage on the 'ones that got away'.
Best hunting vid item for me would be a helmet cam with recorder, quietly narrated through the stalk. Would be exciting viewing to say the least ;)
Ado
Mike I agree. Dave Brooks makes the best dvds. His knowledge of the aussie bush and his proffesional and ethical presentation really represents the bow hunting community.
Dave Brooks shows what he has in his pack and many other tips for hunting. One thing that is really missing is showing how to track eg: scatts, tracks gaits. A dvd showing how to track would help all of us improve our skills.
Personally, the best parts of any bowhunting film are the spotting of game, the stalk, the game up close, the shot and the kill. I feel the narration of all this is fantastic for building up the whole experience!
I also don't mind seeing quality game doing it own thing, especially big heads etc.
All game shot with an arra on film is great to watch, just love the death by arrow!
Thanks for the reply's guys - makes for interesting reading.
Where can i get a hold of Dave brooks's movies? I have never heard of him.
Its funny you know, i'm not a big one for watching whats in a blokes pack/gear etc, i guess cause ive been doing it a while and have that stuff pretty much sorted (i think), i rather see good clear footage if big animals in the bush and blokes knocking them over with archery tackle.
For me i like to watch movies that make me go 'wow' through either the size and quality of the animals, the shot, or just the angle of the filming.
Each to their own, and i guess the best bowhunting movies will show a little bit of everything to keep the majority satisfied that they have got value for money.
Cheers,
Maxy

I agree- Brook's video of hunting the high country was a great balance of action, technical tips and explanation and general outdoor entertainment. That must have been quite a challenge. But- would it be better to make a seperate, detailed hunting tips, equipment set-up, bush skills, etc. video?
Most of all, I enjoy watching an arrow flying towards a critter in s-l-o-w motion. Scenic footage and "around the campfire yarns" are always great for a break from the action. I really don't have patience for poor-quality footage and become giddy trying to focus on overly-shaky camera work (although I appreciate that it's almost impossible to keep a steady camera without a tri/mono-pod)! Best luck Maxy.

one thing that really gets under my skin is when they introduce the species and give a 20 min speel on how they got there, where they came from, when they got there, and all the rest of that crap... a quick intro to each species is good, but if i wanted to watch a doco, i would turn on the discovery channel... you buy hunting videos to watch hunts... as such, heaps of shot and stalk footage is great, and missing is definately part of the hunt, so plenty of blown stalks and misssed shots in like a bloopers reel too... also, camp shots and stories are always entertaining...
and i think that what most hunting and outdoors films dont do is definately the how to's. all sorts of things from caping, butchering, salting, b/h sharpening...
wazza
I'm the same as wazza here maxy with the long history lesson on each game animal thats why i loved your first vid as it got straight to the hunting. In my opinion the best part about these video's is the actual shots on video, and too much footage between these shots makes me loose interest. I love seeing really clear footage of the arrow hitting home and i really love the small game hunting as well. Your short small game vid you posted in the vids sectiong could quite easily go into one of your movies mate as i would love to see it clearer on the tv. As for small game or big game most poeple like to see what they hunt themselves thats why my most fav part of your last vid was the mountain mayhem as i hunt in the rugged hills after goats a lot (wish i had the pigs as well) I think the only animals i like to see a lot of, them doing their own thing are the deer species as i could watch deer footage for hours.
Hope that makes sense lol and i'm looking forward to your next one mate.

something 45mins-1hr maybe 1 1/2hrs tops,
i don't know about anyone else but for me any longer than that
and i start to loose interest.
give it a reasonable running time BUT "always leave the viewer wanting more"

i like to see the shots taken, but the stalk before the shot is always good to see how the hunter got from point A to point B where they took the shot. footage of game in the wild is good as is small game shots.
even scenes of gear to be used/taken, the campsite, and the surrounds are good to watch, to get an idea of what people need for their hunts.

a bit of everything but i think a bit of camp cooking with the game killed would be good.
