A couple of old boggie boards taped together, or a couple of old closed cell foam camping mats cut up and taped together, or a couple pieces of thick rubber matting, or a nice big sandy bank/mound.

If your broadheads penetrate your target, unscrew the head before removing the arrow as this will do less damage to the target as you withdraw the arrow.

Cheers Tim

how much poundage are you shooting?

mate what i use is just plain cardboard packed in a box it does the same job as what the other people said but cardboard is everywhere and easy to get a hold of

i used a box filled with an old tarp at first, but some use boxes with bubble wrap packed in them. only thing is the plastic melts round the arrow but is easy to remove.

What about a bail of straw? I have shot my 50lb hoyt into it, worked well.

I have a large sand target that is boarded by railway sleepers, the sand cost me about 80 dollars delivered and it will never wear out, shot thousands of arrows into it and it never gets damaged. You could make a small one about 3 feet wide by 4 foot deep and high, it wouldn't cost much and they are a great butt. Howie

Well this is what my dad made... it works ok. Its a foam box with the end cut out, then he filled the box with box lids. It pulls the arrows up well then all you have to do is un screw the broadhead and pull them back through.

I've used a number of different things- probably the cheapest and easiest is a chook food bag stuffed with old pillows and foam- I just keep replacing the bag and restuffing it with more foam and stuff. I print off targets on my computer and tape them on the butt with masking tape. I bought a big Morrells target butt but it didn't last well with broadheads, they now pass through more often than not and I have to refletch. Alright if you unscrew the BH prior to pulling your arrows, but at 40 meters and over, they don't always penetrate fully so you can't do that, and pulling the BH back out rips the guts out of the foam target.
Howie, i'm interested in the sand butt- does it damage your shafts at all? How do you mount a target face on sand? Can you post a photo?

I usually shoot at a clothes peg or a bit of plastic. The sand will dull your broadheads quickly but hasn't affected my carbons at all and I have shot them hundreds of times. I took my bow down to the sand and soil place and asked if I could shoot my arrows into his sand piles. The finer sand does not stop the arrows, you want a sand that compacts reasonably hard. Adding water firms up the sand. I built a open ended box shape made of wooden sleepers to contain the sand. It is a great target. Howie

yeh i just went outside shooting and i used 3 lounge cushions and a bag full of tightly packed grass and dirt and i was amazed that it still went through all 3 cushions and the bag.

A person at our club actually shoots at cow manure laying out on the ground in the paddocks to sight in his bow so maybe if u have a few blunt broadheads laying around u can muck around wif it like that just a suggestion.

I dont have a digital camera and even if I did I am pretty thick when it comes to computers. I will get Bowhunting4eva to come over, take the photos and show me how this thing operates propaly. Howie
