Can I come?
Heavy arrows and heavy bows. I made up some 900 grain arrows out of my 80 pound Hoyt Ultramag, shot a few goats and foxes with it, needless to say I got total penetration. I was hoping to have a buff hunt this year and wanted to see how the arrows performed. Also do a search on this site as there are a couple of guys who have taken buff. Howie

Here is a post I did a while back when Howie asked similar questions

Howie,

I used a standard Carbon Express Terminator shaft (around 10 grains an inch) with Blazer 2" vanes and a 130 grain Outback Supreme broadhead, my bow is a Mathews Switchback 73lb @ 29" draw. As far as making up heavy arrows goes I have done a bit of mucking around with some mates up here. More often than not the arrow has poor flight (paper tune) and loses alot of penetration as a result. I have thought about going upto a 12 gpi shaft but that is about it, for me it is all about arrow placement, which is something else again, along with choosing the right animal to shoot.

I hope this helps mate.

Cheers Noel

As I wrote in the previous posts, we found that we struggled to get proper arrow flight with arrows that were loaded up with bits of tube and other things to increase the weight. Between my self and my mates up here there has been a fair few buff hit the ground in the last 12 to 18 months and most have had excellent penertration (quite often full pass throughs) from using standard weight (10GPI) arrows because of several things. Most poor peno shots are due to poor shot placement rather then the gear.

1) Excellent arrow flight is a must.

I have seen a 900grain arrow (that flew lika dog) pull up on a tuff old boar after only penetrating 8" or so.

2) Shot placement must be spot on.

For a large animal, the vitals do not go back very far, and man they can handle a beating.

3) Choose the right animal.

To me this almost the most important point, if the buff is alerted, fired up, not at a great shot angle, the shot is a little long or even if you have a doubt then let him walk it will save you a lot of heart ache in the end, I have been there and done that.

While I don't normally have a backup man with a rifle I would strongly suggest that you do, especially if you choose to ignore any of the above tips.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I know it all but I can tell you that if it goes bad for what ever reason these animals have the power and determination to turn your hunting adventure from champagne to **** in 1 second flat.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Noel
