i went out with piggy today for a hunt and managed to take a sambar stag with my crossbow! :D :D
i'll post some pics tomorrow on or piggy might post some tonight. i am absolutely stoked!
we'd been walking for a couple of hours in pretty rugged country and i was pooped and sore from all the trips and falls id had, so i had a quick rest by a tree and was looking for an easier and quieter route to navigate through.
i then heard a couple of footsteps above me and turned to see a sambar stag coming towards me. he must have spotted my movements and stopped in his tracks to stare right at me 20 metres away.
it was the first time id actually seen a clear view of a relaxed sambar and was pretty amazed at there actual size. i couldn't believe my eyes. it was facing directly towards me and didn't present a decent shot, so i slowly raised the crossbow, tried to stay calm, and waited till he offered a better shot.
after what seemed like forever, he slowly turned so he was quartering towards me, and before i knew it id pulled the trigger.
i hit him around the front right shoulder, and was happy with the shot placement, but not so happy that my 4 inch vanes were still visible as he fleed the scene. it must have hit heavy bone, and this meant that only 15 or so inches of arrow actually penetrated, and i was worried that wasn't enough for an animal of that size.
after i called out to piggy who was nearby, we followed the footprints and eventually got onto a bloodtrail that got much better the further we went.
piggy assured me by the good trail that it was a decent shot and not to worry. he was absolutely right as a little bit further on we found him expired about 180 metres from where i took the shot. unfortunately he had one antler broken off just above the base, but it didn't dull my excitement one bit. :D
i couldn't believe id just taken a sambar stag with archery equipment! we got a few photos and then piggy cleaned him and removed the meat as i had no idea what the heck to do. its something i'll definately have to learn.
it was a bloody hard walk getting the meat back to the truck, but it was a hard walk i was more than happy to do .
many many thanks must go to piggy for taking me out and all the messy work he did for me. thanks alot buddy!
and to woody for making a top broadhead. it came out razor sharp and as straight as ever.
