View Full Version : Cutting carbon arrows
How do you cut your carbon shafts?? Howie
I made myself a cuttoff tool using some scrap timber and a dremal style el-cheapo tool from Bunnings. Works a treat, Have posted pics of it before (not sure if it was here or on Ozbow or both:rolleyes:)

Mainly use a grinder with a cutoff disk, but a fine blade hacksaw will do it you just need to rotate the shaft as you cut so you don't end up with slivers.
I have a simple jig made that I use for this, I will take a photo tomorrow and post it here.
PS song sounds alright for the DVD, I should have it close to finished by next week.

And Hood,
There looks like a S**T load of dust over your jig in that pic. You should consider fixing down a vacuum cleaner nozzle right near the edge of the disc to reduce dust.
I put a flexi hose on the end of a nozzle, sit the vacuum cleaner outside so that any lost dust remains outside.

Thats exactly what I'm doing once I get the wife a new vacum for her birthday:P:mad::P
But I always wear a dust mask and have the shed door open when cutting the shafts and wash my hands really really well before drinking or eating anything.
I use the supercheap auto imitation dremal. Does the job well, although the little cutoff discs are fragile. Thats why we wear eye protection though.

Ya? And you will get a divorce for yours!! Dont you know you never buy stuff like that as a birthday present for the wife? Along with a mop, dishes, broom, pots and pans or any other household tool.
I know cause I been there and done that and it wasnt pretty...
I use just about the same method as Hood...

Why not get the shop you buy them from to do it usually no extra charge and no dust or mess to worry about

Air powered metal cutter. RPM 28,000 :-)
I usually use the edge of a triangular file and rotate the shaft whilst lightly filing. I just reckon there would be a quicker way to accomplish this and thus posted the question. I usually get the Archery shops to cut them, but I have just received a new bow and was experimenting with different arrow lengths. Cheers for in the info, Howie
