Hi mate yer it is the china from broken toilet cistern I got to practice on.You are right on the hardness thing as the experts say it is hard to learn on because it is so hard but it is free so good to learn on.I have read about heating the rocks they use to make them easier to work and might try this if I can get a bit more of an idea about temp and time etc.I found a site on fleabay selling Chert so may buy a bit of that soon to.

Americans have a more exotic name for that one mate, "Thunder Chert". Heat treating it might be the way to go as the tiolet suites are heated to very high tremperatures to cure the china and galze. Wonder how they would go in the microwave...Glenn...

Ok serious now, working in a plumbing shop has some bonuses like being able to get the broken cisterns(the tank) and they are nice and flat pieces you get which makes life a bit easier for the knapper. When this stuff breaks it leaves a VERY sharp edge.

I will have to have a look for the rock I brought home from Longreach that aborigionals used to knapp with. The rock is white and has a greasy feel to it. They use to carry it up from the chanels and knapp it on the Jump-Up, usually under the trees.
Do you use copper nails to knapp with?...Glenn...

Yer a copper rod in the end of a round stick and a copper bopper for the hitting part.I will post a pic of my tools tomorrow

I had a bit of a play today with some glass and got this far towards a b/head from the bottom of a beer bottle.I broke the bottom out and used a pressure flaker to get it to this stage.Starting to get bigger flakes going further across so must be getting better.

Agree with you there glen Kimall work is quite nice indeed.

Below is two of the many photo's of some of the works of Peter Rodgers who is on the left and just one of the many works of art that he has done I will get more photo's up as soon as I can find them.

Sorry about the quality of this photo but it was the best that Pete could do at short notice at the time of making.

The head is made from Obsidian, a very beautiful stone when held up to sunlight.

I agree with you there Glen. We were wondering who he was when he turned up at The Gathering, just pulled up walked over to the camp fire smiled and as soon as he spoke we new it was him then, when questioned about the missing hair he replied I'm on the market for a new girl and I didn't wont to frighten her off;);) but when she gets to know me better then I will grow it back:lol:
