The very sad tale of ìold yellaî , and a young man missing his dog.
On the w/e I went for my usual once monthly deer hunt to fill my fridge, and I thought I would have a bit of fun and invite someone along to share a bow hunt on some fallow.
Young Cameron was very keen and we set out into the cold alpine regions on Thursday night, all full of beans and looking forward to plugging a few deer. We stopped for the night at a hut on a friends property and we were glad to be able to fire up the stove to combat the -10 C overnight temperatures. Next morning we set out early for the deer property and arrived to find the owner still away, so we headed off to check out the hunting and set up camp. We stalked around in the forest for a while before we saw a bunch of fallow crossing a trail headed to a spot I knew well. We ran back to set up an ambush.
Cam set up in behind some fallen trees and a patch of blackberries where the deer had appeared to be headed too. It worked a treat and a while later (just as CamÃ*s patience had been thoroughly tested) a small mob of deer appeared at the edge of the forest and started to walk past Cam.
For weeks now people had been advising Cam to practice his long shots and he had been practicing like mad at 35 metres. It would have been great preparation for the deer on this place if it wasnÃ*t for the fact that most shots that present themselves are at about 12 to 15 metres. Sure enough Cams shot went just over the back of the deer and the jig was up. His peep (which was giving him grief before the trip) had distracted him and he had just reverted to the training he had been doing recently.
The next morning another ambush was set up and the results were a carbon copy. Cam was really feeling the pressure and was kicking himself for making the same mistake twice. Cam had another good hunt that evening and again on on Sunday morning and saw so many deer he was just raving when he got back at lunch time, but unfortunately for him the only shot that he could get was blown when he was spotted fluffing around trying to get his peep sight lined up to get a good sight picture.
I guess that sight is now in the bin.
