View Full Version : What snake is this?
Well i took a pic of this snake over the west coast of SA (north of Elliston SA) Some of the locals say they are just brown snakes but i have seen the normal colour common brown snakes around in the same area's and they look very different. I finally got a photo of one and thought one of you guys might know.

And here is a wombat catching some afternoon sun not far from the snake. Hundreds of wombats over there in that neck of the woods.

Mate its hard to tell but looking at the head its a fare chance it a Brown snake. Colour means nothing.
Browns come in a variety of colours.
BTW did it coil up at you in a figure S shape and very aggressive (bad attitude)

Its a brown snake, can tell by the shape of the head.
Technical name is the West Coast Elliston Brown Trouser snake!! Sorry. The boys are right, colour means nothing. The head shape to me is brown. Either way, Tiger or Brown - he is poisonous. Howie
Hi guys. Definately not a Tiger. It is either a Psuedechis australis/King Brown or a Psuedonaja textillis/Eastern Brown. This area is about the southern limit in SA for King Browns. I cant quite tell from the pic but i would say by the pale flecks that it is a Kingy. Do you have any other pics especially showing the head?
Ads
Sorry no other pics but that about explains it anyway ads. The locals i have asked about them all said they were king browns. I thought it was strange because in the flinders here the king browns i have seen are brown not black but still bloody huge then there's just the common brown snakes. I have seen a heap of them and even in the summer while out working at night there's a lot. They seem to live in the wombat holes and in the cracks under the sheet limestone.

Either way he looks mean and I'd be keeping well clear of him thats for sure.
Brown, like the guys already said color varies greatly sometimes even in a small area. Nice pics mate.
i recon it looks like a snake could hurt i would steer clear either way.

no clue about snakes
dont like them never have never will
theres no worser feeling when your in the bush in grass up to your knees and you spot a snake and then it dissapears and you dont know were it went
i say get the 410 or the shuvell out lol jk's
woodstocka, your a brave man saying that with so many people interested in reptiles on this site. I dont like them around my house because my parents own jack russels and we have already lost 2 from snakes. But i love seeing a few about in the bush and i think you would have to be really unlucky to be bitten. Most times you hear them slideing off before you get close anyway.

'i say get the 410 or the shuvell out lol jk's'
I know your joking but this is the reason behind better than 90% of the snake bites that occur, someone trying to capture or kill the snake. Besides they are a hell of a lot more frightened of you than you will ever be of them to most animals HUMAN = DANGER.

Not to mention that it's illegal to kill a snake unless you have no other alternative and your conered with no way out of the situation and your life is in danger from them having a go at you. And 99.99999% of the time they strike out of fear and self defence rather then a straight out attack on you.

The triangular head would suggest a Tiger, possibly the sub species Penisula Tiger, although the larger bodied King Browns also have a similar head being of the black snake family. A common brown generally has a lot finer haed with out the well defined triangulr shape. Unless it was a juvinile King brown I would lean towards a Tiger.

it's a brown snake - head not quite right for tiger and colour too dull as well.
what type of brown snake can't tell (whether a dugite, king brown etc doesn't really matter as pedantic difference and if bitten all as bad) but it is a brown snake.
