I bought a one year old Garmin Etrex from the U.S. on Ebay. No-one bidded on it because it was not brand new, but there is not a scratch on it. this all means that it arrived at my door for $110 Australian. I use it in my ute as a speedo and trip-meter, as the ute speedo is off because of the bigger than standard tyres. With a 12v cable it by-passes the batteries when there is current from the car, so it doesn't use up the batteries. Wheni get to a hunting spot, i mark where the vehicle is, turn it off, throw it in my pack and go. It is about as big as my mobile phone. It doesn't have all the bells, whistles and downloadable maps some others have, but it gets me out of trouble, and that is all i want it for.
Wouldn't leave home without it.

I have the Etrex as well. Its a compact and robust unit with limited functions compared to the new units that are available today, this makes it more user friendly for me. IMO it has all the necessary functions of a GPS to get you from A to B or out of trouble as Puk said.

For hiking hunting all the bells and whisles aren't really necissary. I (my dad) have a lowrance ifinder h20c which is a coloured hand held mapping chartplotter. We use that for when we are out in the boat zooming around the bay and offshore. I havent been to a property big enough yet to warrent taking the gps plus i always go with people and we take 2 way radios with us which helps us find each other again when we split up but if i did i'd probably prefer one of the small etrex or similar than taking the ifinder which is pretty bulky.

I have a Garmin Etrex, the base yellow model. Had it for about 6 years now and it has never missed a beat. I have used it overseas as well as in Aust. I don't navigate with it (keep it on all the time and follow the arrow) I just mark a waypoint where the car is or any permanent water. Then If I need it to get back to the car all of the data is there. It is also good to mark a position of lost game so you can come back later to resume the search.

Note: I always carry spare batteries and a compass as back up, just in case.

Garmin Etrax as well, light robust fairly easy to use. I do hook it up to my laptop and run mapping sotware for all the bells and whistles, plan trips, locate water, old roads etc.

I stress to do what GREG D recommends, use the GPS but use paper maps and a compass as your backup form of navigation. If the GPS fails when your in the middle of nowhere a compass and map can be the difference between life and death or at least sleeping in your swag or on the bare earth.

I've got a little Garmin Gehko too. It's a basic unit, but it does everything I want it to. I like the fact that it's very small and lightweight. I'm happy with it.

Like it seems a far few others I also use the etrex a compact unit and in the 5years I have had it I have never had a problem with it.I like a lot of others also carry a silva compass and map just in case so far have never needed to use either but the peace of mind is well worth it.

I have a Garmin GEKKO 101 , it is a basic very compact unit that has all the navigation , tracking and speed and distance features and accuracy required for any use I would ever subject it too . Worked a treat until I foolishly loaned it too a mate and when it come back it had a crack in the case near one of the battery terminals which I didn't discover for a couple of months when I went too turn it on , $200.00 down the drain . When I replace it I will buy the same unit again . regards Perry

I've also got the Garmin 72. I've had it for a few years and it's never let me down. One bonus with the 72 is that it's waterproof and floats. Mine spends 75% of the time in the boat (and sometimes in the canoe) so thats handy.
I use an adaptor cable to plug it into the pc to save my fishing spots and tracks. I would hate to lose some of them spots.
Cheers Shane

HI All
I have a Garmin Legend the B&W model and it is great and use the attached maping software. But beware in deep valleys on cloudy days you can loose coverage and it will not track (all brands are the same) for a car mount I use windscreen mount that cost about $7.00 from www.wagner.net.au, it is adjustable mount but works well and is cheaperthan the Garmin unit for over $60.00
