Hi everyone,
Im making myself an arrow case and decided to pen on a pic of a pig. Im trying to burn it into the lid but having trouble with the iron following the grain of the ply. Any tips on how to get a neat job. I was thinking I should be using a rounder tip instead of a pointy one.

I drew the pic on paper then transfered it to the ply. Cartoon style is the only way i draw as im hopeless at life like ones.

One thing I often do is make the lines out of tiny overlapping dots. Just touch the tip down to make a little dot, then overlap the next dot slightly and keep going on like that. From up close it doesn't look as good but from a distance you can't tell the difference.

Another option my brother in law uses is a magnifying glass in the sun (like little kids do to ants etc). Put the timber in the sun, then move the magnifying glass so as to focus the sun's light/heat on the one spot and it will burn the timber. A bit of practice on some scrap and you should be able to direct it evenly along your lines without being limited by grain.

Hope that helps! ;)

Could you go over the whole picture with a cold round tip first? This would depress the grain of the wood and make it easier to follow with a hot tip.

Just a thought.

Cheers Tim
