View Full Version : Potential archery ending injury

Well I tried to pull off a cunning stunt last weekend and it didn't come off too well.
Was stacking branches, off a tree that I had cut down, onto my trailer, then climbing up and standing on the branches to compress the load.
After getting all the branches on the trailer, I climbed up for the last compress when I caught my foot on one of the branches and fell off.
As the likely landing place was on the A-frame, I did the big jump to an open space and landed, like a spear tackle, on the point of the shoulder from about a 2 mtr height.
Stupid I know, but looked like a good idea at the time.
Now I can move the arm pretty well in most planes but drawing any weight bow leaves me gasping in agony.
I will see what comes of the injury in the next week or so, but I am prepared for the worst.
My contingency plan would be to try a left handed draw and see if that works for me in the short term, while I rehab the injury.
Worst case scenario would be to sell all my right handed archery equipment and convert to left handed.
Gee mate,
that's terrible.
All the best with it. I hope it heals up well for you. shoulders can be a real PITA.

Give it time and dont rush, shoulder injuries need to be taken seriously, I still have issues with a recurring baseball injury many years later.

That's not good news mate. I have done my left shoulder twice and right once when I played league. One time i did it was a spear tackle right on the point like you describe. On all occasions it was my AC joint that separated. Can you move your arm up above your head when you hold it straight out to the side of your body. If it hurts on the way up, it could be what happened to me. Rest assured it will get better if this is your problem. I stayed off mine for 6 to 8 weeks each time and got back into footy no problem. It does bug me sometimes at night when I sleep, but it doesn't bother me in an archery sense.
Thats no good Phil, i feel for you mate.
All the best for a speedy recovery.

Not good at all mate just give it time..
Get to the quack and get some qualified advice. Next time use a rope to compress it..Wishing you well. Howie

I have to agree with howie. I'm no expert in the medical field and I was just passing on my experience with a similar injury. By all means you should see the doc as they know best.
Clavicle??????
Should have xray.
cheers mick
I hope its a speedy recovery mate.
It sounds like it could take a month or 2 though.

Two months or so away from the Chec Mate sounds like a prison sentence.
I'll end up scratching marks on the Gym wall documenting the time until I can shoot again.
By my examination I have fractured the Acromial end of the Clavicle under the S. I. Acromio-Clavicular ligaments.
Because it's not complicated I have waited to have it X-Rayed (Tuesday).
If you're gunna brake a Clavicle, this is the best place to do it as it is well supported by Ligament and tendon as well as a generous covering of musculature from the Trapezius, Ant. Deltoid and Infraspinatus from the rear.
Been a while since I have had to rehab myself (prick of a job, shocking patient).
But if damage has occured in the Synovial spaces, there could be long term discomfort reducing usable bow poundage which may necessitate the change to a Levo stature.

mate sounds like you know a fair bit or are ya just bs?;)..lol nah if its bone than yeah just ganna take time ey? but if you have damaged the lligements and/ or muscular tissue..then definatly see a myotheripist..(they are same as physio but with muscle ect). my sister is studying it at uni and can really work a teat on painfull muscles. my left trap( trapezius) plays up a fair bit so when shes down she massages it and releives the pain for quite a while.
hope you get better mate.
cheers.

not good aye mate, i buggered my shoulder playing footy a few years back, i got tackled and i landed smack on my shoulder ( got a free kick though i could barely hold the ball) i could'nt even pick up something as light as a couple of thin book's. luckily i wasnt into archery at the time as it took a good two months or so to heal.
all the best and hope you fully recover.
dan.
That sounds pretty nasty mate, but it could have been worse. I wish you a speedy recovery.

hope for a speedy and total re covery for you mate and next time mybe you should inwest in a paar or rachet straps good luck robert
Hope it all goes well. I had a similar problem a two years ago and had to have the tendon that secures the top head of the bicep re-attached. It was frustrating as hell going through the physio, but I forced myself to do it all and made sure that I didn't skip ahead too quickly so as not to re-injure myself. It ended up meaning about 6 months without drawing a bow back but it paid off as the shoulder is as good as new to the point where I'm even thinking about upping my draw weight to 80lb.
hopefully it will be a quick recovery for you
i did something to my right shoulder about a year ago
my advise is rest it as much as you can and just try maybe once or twice a week to draw your bow when a hurt my shoulder i couldnt shoot for 3 months (now thats the bit that hurt)
another bit of advise might sound stupid but try and do small things that you normally do with your right hand like carrying things. Do with your left hand
once again all the best for a quick recovery

Thanks for the kind words fellas.
I tried the old York ELB 40# left handed yesterday, could draw it, but very painful.
Looks like I am just gunna have to wait for it to heal before doing any archery.
Six months TJ, mate, that would be real hard to take.
Like you I was considering upping my poundage before this.

Well all is going well on the shoulder front, hopefully it's cured.
Started shooting my sons 30# recurve for sets, reps and assigned rest periods for my exercise specific rehab and assigned a general weight training exercise program for the major shoulder musculature.
Then progressed to my 40# long bow with the same protocols and then purchasing a 55# Horse bow to continue the rehab.
I only needed a week or so with the 55# bow before I could confidently draw my Checmate @ 60#.
Accuracy wasn't too good but it's improving everyday.
Yesterday I pulled out the Ross for the first time in weeks.
Felt real good.
Again, accuracy was off but I put about 50 arrows through her with very little discomfort.
Already planning a visit to my Goat property on Cup day.

Sounds like you are well on your way to a full recovery. Hopefully you heal really well and it doesn't give you any more bother.
