Today i went for a quick rabbit hunt that was spoilt after a man and he's two dogs walked straight through my prime rabbit area.
But when i was walking around i suddenly noticed the buzzing of flys and looked down to find a dead rabbit. After inspecting the rabbit i found the only sign of it injury was that it's nose had been replaced by a hole full of tiny maggets. I think that this would have happened after the death and the maggets would have eaten out the nose after it had died.
So how did it die? my first thought was mixo but it's eyes and face looked clean.
so how did it die...?

well exually it looked only about one third through it's life so old age wouldnt be it.
and the fact that it was crawling with maggets didnt exactly make me want to perform an ortopsy, lol
It might have been Calicivirus.
Whereabouts are you again?
When i was down in SA, with every spell of hot weather it seemed to go through them again.
If a rabbit got it and survived, it seemed to be immune to it after that, but its offspring were not. This might explain why a young one died. It might have been the first time it was exposed to it.
Just a theory.

it could of been another older rabbit, when i was out hunting about 2 weeks ago, i was walking along when all of a sudden two rabbits came rolling down the hill fighting and squeeling when they finally broke apart one looked badly injured and it limped back into the blackberries, these rabbits were the same size so if there was a bigger bunny atacking a young bunny im sure it could end fatally as they were really going hard.
dan.
Was the hole the size of a .22 calibre rifle? or .22 of an inch across. When using solids they can penetrate thru and only leave a small entry hole. A blowfly drops some eggs in the damaged tissue and maggots appear shortly after.............Howie

ok that explains it all, ok heres what has happend, early the morning of this tragic accident the rabbit had come out to feed, and forgot to wear its slippers and it has cought a cold, later that day it was feeding next to the rock you had told us about when it suddenly needed to sneez and in doing so it smashed its head against the rock:P:P:P
