View Full Version : First blood for the Widow
I went out yesterday morning to chase a few fallow around or try and get a fox to come into range, so I could blood my new bow.
I started out at first light and went up a hill to see if there were any fallow out on the flats at the top feeding.
As I came to the crest of the hill, I almost didn't notice a young black spiker licking a saltblock that the farmer had put out.
I stalked in to 20 meters of him, only to have him turn and walk straight at me.
He wandered in to five meters of me and I just couldn't draw on him and when I decided to he bolted.
I then travelled a bit more and spotted a small doe feeding on the edge of some timber.
I spent about 20 minutes stalking in on her and at 15 meters I had her broadside.
I drew back the bow and released the arrow, hitting her higher than I wanted, but still putting her down in about 20 meters.
On inspection, I had hit her high in the lungs.
It was my first kill with the new bow, and my first trad deer.
I took the meat and the skin too as she had a nice coat on her.

Good one Mozza, must be satisfying to get a deer as your first kill with your new Widow. Are they wooden shafts you used?
Congrats Mozza great way to blood the Widow.
That arrow either has one big wrap on it or thats a lot of blood in it;) well done
Glenn they look like GT Traditional shafts to me........try hard woods:P;)

Nicely done Mozza, you've got to be happy to take a deer for your first kill with the Widow, great going mate.
What was the arrow and broadhead combination used Mozza and what sort of penetration did it achieve?

Mozza, are you going to Wellington for the Trophy Takers Weekend? I would love to see that Bow. I am shooting a very Old Bear Grzzly, 65pd Model THAT I BROUGHT FOR $ 70, TEN YEARS AGO. Now is the first time i have shot it well. I think it is o.k but would love to see what a Ferrari of bows feels like. Nice shooting, James Warne

Catcha later
Thanks for the kind words, I was pretty stoked to see her go down. :)
The bow is a PSA V Ironwood
63# @ 28 inch, shooting goldtip 75/95 traditionals with zwickey 2 bladers.
The shot was a complete passthrough, and the big red arrow wrap is compliments of the deer.
I am hanging the deer for a couple of days, but I cant wait to eat a bit.
Warnie, I hope to get to the trophy takers weekend, but I just have to sort it out with work, but I hope to see you there.
Well done Mozza,
That second photo is a gem.

Jason, it was damn good eating
Only problem is that it all went in a week:o
I went out with the curve again yesterday and today to get another one before the season closes, but it just didn't happen.
Oh well, still got the weekend:D
I dont like the bow, looks.. too clunky no offence nice kill though mate :)
I thought exactly the same thing until I saw one in the flesh.
Then I fired one:o
That was when I knew I had to have one;)
