What would the minimum poundage be for a scrub bull when hunting either with a longbow or recurve?

55# to 60# will handle then, have a read of Ed Ashbys new penetration test, it's a real eye opener...Glenn...

im looking at going on a guided hunt for them and pigs and i wanted to use a longbow or recurve but the waiting time on a new longbow is 6 months ( for a fox ) and im hopeing to go a bit afte so it wont give me long to get the groove of a new bow. Say if i got a 68# longbow what grain arrows would i have to use?

Agree with Glenn 55 # is adequete , I shot a scrub bull with an old Bear Bearcat takedown 55# and a 21:17 alloy Davies concorde broadhead back in the mid 80's . The arrow penetrated to the fletches . Another mate shot a wild cow for meat a few years back with a 50# Heron recurve . More important to shoot the heaviest bow you can shoot accuratly and matched heavy arrows than hunt with a heavy bow your not consistantly accurate with .

Perhaps I was lucky with the arrow penetration I doubt my arrows went more than 560 odd grains [10 grains per pound , 14 is better ] , as Ed says in his broadhead study , a minimum 650 grain 2 blade broadhead with a tanto type point ground to it for reliable penetration on big game . regards Perry

Michael Lehmann has shot 4 bulls with one arrow each, bows from 49 to 55 pounds, and heavy wooden shafts with razor sharp 2 bladers. His arrow flight is awesome and he waits for that perfect close shot. Both bulls I saw him shoot dropped within sight. Howie
