We had not been for a hunt for several days and I was beginning to suffer from withdrawal symptoms, so we set out this morning to a favourite goatie tank to try to alleviate the symptoms of this malady!! I was also keen to try my new arrows; a different shaft / broadhead combination than I previously used.
I was using 35-55 carbons, with weight tubes and a Tusker Spirit up front, all up weight 530gr. This achieved the desired penetration but I have now opted for a simpler combination. Now I am shooting 55-75 carbons with a Tusker Concord, weighing 500gr. And today they proved deadly.
The goats were moving in to tank as we arrived, a mob that we had seen previously. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing in gusts toward them, and we had no time to relocate. The mob plonked themselves down 100m from me for about 10mins, I was surprised that they had not already winded me. After a bit of hesitation, one billy led the way in, and the rest of the mob followed. I was positioned behind a tree, 20m from the path that they were intending to take to water: but as I drew back my bow I was winded! However, they only trotted 20m and stood still, not quite knowing what the threat was. I knew I would not have another chance at them, and although there were no big horns, I went for the biggest billy there. Well, a 40m quartering away shot it was, and the mob bolted. I was gazing in the direction of the rapid evacuation; thought I saw a goat on the ground. Then thought it was a log. Or was it a goat???
My first assumption was correct, goat, not log! :D He made it about 50m and dropped dead. The arrow had passed through his gut and out his opposite shoulder. Not a passthrough, but at that distance I was pleased with the penetration, as I only shoot 50#. Another skin for the collection!
