Since Monday a good mate (Rohan) and i have been talking of the hunt we would be going on Saturday. Charlie (Rohans dad) had told us he would take us out and hopefully bag some goats (this would be my first). i was so excited i could barely sleep on friday night.
Saturday came and i got plenty of practice in at 30 and 40 metres until i could hit what i wanted. Time ticked by very slowly and finally when 1 O'clock came i headed into rohans place to begin the hunt. We drove out to the destination and parked the car at a hunters hut in the valley of some of the biggest, steepest hills around New England. we got our gear ready and began walking towards the hills whilst scanning for any sign of goats. It wasn't long before we saw some goats on the far hill and we watched them. We got up to walk and charlie told us to get low and look up the hill we were on. Rohan and i looked to see a few nice goats without the faintest idea we were there. We walked to the opposite side of the hill and Rohan told me to go in for my first stalk. I began slowly but with only one tree between me and the goats it was hard. a few of of the nannies spotted me and alerted the big billy, this mob was gone up the hill but only walking slowly. damn..
with that we continued on along the creek to find some funny looking rocks that turned out to be pigs. It was rohans turn to stalk so i followed close behind with an arrow ready. We got over the hill to find no sign of them?? We then heard noises further up the hill and about twenty pigs ran straight past us but none were stopping for a look. Charlie took a few shots with the twenty two but that was it.
It was now getting pretty late so we agreed we would head up the hill and then back to the car. we saw the previous mob of goats up the next peak so we had something to eat while they walked over the next hill so we could get a good stalk. we continued up the hill when they went through a fence and i was at the front when i froze and was staring a billy straight in the eyes. he continued eating and i drew back and sat my 10 metre pin a fraction higher than his lungs and let the string slip through my fingers. i heard him make a bleating noise and turn for downhill. i turned and looked at rohan who gave me thumbs up and told me to get on top of the hill to see were he went. i stood at the peak and watched the billy fall and make his last kicks. i went down to see the huge hole the supreme 115 grain broadhead made and after shaking rohan and charlies hand i got some photos. he measured 26 inches spread, which i was extremely happy with. Heres what came of it.
