View Full Version : Snake proof gaiters
I live in Cooktown and there are heaps of snakes around. Especially taipans and deathadders. For peice of mind and so the missus feels more comfortable when I hunt solo, does anyone use or know of any good snake proof gaiters. If so, do you know where could I get my hands on some. Thanks for your help.
Steven.

I'm getting some from Cabelas, unless I can find them locally, havn't looked very hard. $65 USD for knee height mossy oak warm weather gaiters.
I ve got 2 different pairs from cabela's and had one pair from huntec which I sold. the huntec are excellent but I found them way to hot for the tropics as they have a heavy canvas liner. the two pairs I got from cabela's one has a nylon liner the other has a goretex liner. both offer better comfort in tropicall conditions than huntec but I still can't go past a long pair of trouser/slacks and sturdy leather boots for snake protection and comfort.

I reckon a pair of High Tek Magnum or similiar boots that come up around the middle of your shin would be great. Stop bites, thorns etc ......Howie

Not so much for snakes but for burs I found a pair at my local army disposal store which are made from a canvass material, only problem is they need to be put on before your boots and get hot.
When on a hunt a while back with Mozza, a mate of his Brett had a pair that were suede that he said he got from Horseland, they wrapped around the leg and held with velcro. Far better in my opinion.
Wellsy
Bear, Where did you get the High Tek's from and how much?
Do you have the contact details of the shops??? No one here in Bathurst stocks them and I want a pair for this summer!!
Cheers mate

I like the sound of the suede gaiters- I assume they would be quiet against undergrowth? When I first hunted I tried a pair of nylon hiking gaiters- they were so noisy I left them in the bush about 100meters from the car. I've been considering a pair of the kiwi silent-tech gaiters but if the suede ones are quiet I think they would give better protection from snakes. Unless of course they bite you on the bum. If there were taipans where I hunt, I think I'd try stalking on 10 foot stilts.

Cabelas also have a few different brands of camo snake proof boots, stops just below the knee. I tried some on when I was there, last month, was very tempted
Howie,
I got my hitek boots from NT general store which is the NT's version of a army surplus store had them for around 5 years now so can't remember how much they cost? The other boots I like are the Redback terra combat boots from the defence force which are similar to the hiteks.
The gaitors from cabelas that I have are all silent suede on the outside with a nylon or gortex liner and come to around your knee! not bad for keeping the snakes and burs out but don't offer the comfort levels you get from a loose fitting set of slacks in the tropics.
