Went for a walk around some swamps today looking for some action but all seemed quiet:( there were quite a few vehicle tracks getting around which I was told about by the owner but I just needed to get get my fix of being out in the bush:D

The swamps seemed lifeless except for the abundant brumbies which the TO's didn't want me to touch as they had them already promised to a local pet meat supplier.

after seeing very little sign around the swamps in the way of boars or buff I decided to try my luck on a few of the millions of geese getting about on the edges of the swamps. After some lengthy stalks I manage to take two geese out of three shots using the same arrows I would normally use for any other game up here:)

then it was off home for the plucking session which is easy if you know how;)

first off you cut the wings off at the first join nearest the body

while you are doing that you should have already made a fire and have a large drum half filled with water coming to the boil!
once the water is boiling you can dunk the geese keeping them submerged with a dunking stick for at least 15-20 seconds.

once that has been done let them cool for a minute or two then start plucking. the feathers should come out fairly easily by simply rubbing them with your thumbs in the same direction trhat they go into the skin:confused:

once the feathers have all been removed it's a simple case of cutting a hole around the anus and removeing all the guts through that hole, simply wash the plucked and gutted goose with clean water and cook up a storm MMMMMM!

That's great mate.
I'd love to be able to hunt some of those down this way mate, they look like they'd be very tasty.

ive also herd that you can dip them in melted wax let the wax dry then just peel the wax off the feathers should be stuck to the wax.

Sorry for any confusion but it is legal in the northern territory only to hunt waterfowl with the bow and arrow and is illegal in all other australian states as far as I am aware:confused:

here's the nt legislation for those that are interested

http://www.nt.gov.au/nreta/wildlife/permits/pdf/waterfowlfact.pdf

11. WHAT TYPE OF WEAPON CAN BE USED TO SHOOT WATERFOWL?
You can use a shotgun or a bow, but for safety reasons you cannot use rifles, pistols or crossbows. Shotguns larger than 10 gauge or smaller than 20 gauge may not be used.

Great work ,I bet they tasted awesome. Not something I had thought of taking with a bow but if it's legal then great work.

Thats a hard one arraslinger! they have a taste all to their own, they are similar to lamb in texture but oilier but the flavour can't really be compared to anything but maybe wild duck but are much richer:confused: they are a aquired taste for sure!

Good haul Bear :)

Do the geese hang around all year, or are they a seasonal thing?
