View Full Version : 2nd Bow made........
Ok after making a kids longbow with Glenns help a few weeks ago I have now made one from scratch at home by myself. For this one I cut and ground the laminations myseld from American Oak and used some black fiberglass I got for backing a boardbow.I laminated the riser from Kwila(SP) and the oak again with a strip of the black glass. It is about 52 inches long and not sure how heavey as it came out of the form this afternoon so wont bend it until the weekend. It is still very rough as I have only just nocked the glue off and have the hand shaping to go yet.I will put up more pics as it progresses.

great work there kimall cant wait to see it finished. :P
She looks good Kim. Be good to see what weight it come out on the weekend and how it shoots...Glenn...
It is a fair bit heavier than Maggies bow at 15 it may even be 25 but I will weight it Sat.
Cheers KIM
The recurves will add extra weight, it has nice lines about it...Glenn...
Glenn this is getting a bit addictive you should have warned me.Look out for the new range of kids bows in a store near you.:)
Cheers KIM
Yes it can become a waste of time when you have more important things to do. I spent more time on a bow today instead of working on the house today. Did you keep a record of the glue up for future reference?...Glenn...
Yer mate all in the head its not hard to remember the details when you have only made one:)
Cheers KIM
Get it all down on paper, it gets a bit confusing around number 20 or 100 and believe you me it doesen't take long for 100 to come around, I have kept records since the very first bow I even made...Glenn...
Ok got into it a bit tonight and couldnt wait until the weekend so strung it and did some tillering and most of the work on the riser and grip.the first pic is as it came off the form and the right lib is way stiff in the middle but I have touched it up and now it is much better. It draws 15 pound at 23 which is the same but the weight is there real early so it may perform better than the longbow which is the same poundage. It is nice and straight and the string sits on nicley.

Top effort there sofar Kim well done.
Recurves are always a bit harder to make as compared to a longbow. Kim one of the things I do it to measure how much string contact there is with the limb on the tips as well as the measurement at the fadeouts. The bow looks good, you did a good job on the handle, it's going to look nice when she has a few coats of finish on it...Glenn...

Looks good mate, wouldn't mind trying my hand at it one day :D
That is a sweet looking kids recurve Kim, looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Well almost there finally got a coat or two on the little bow and it has come nice I think.I added Oak and Purple heart overlays on the riser and limb tips also so it will be FF compatable.
Cheers..........KIM

Shes come up looking good Kim, very nice, but I feel a bit ripped off mate, where's the butterflys...Glenn...
Typical responce from you its just tall poppy syndrome.:)
Cheers KIM
Every poppy needs a butterfly even tall ones :)...Glenn...
You win you are to good for me..............:):)
Cheers KIM
I rushed home today to have enough light for some tests and here are results.(I tried to do a chart on exel but am too stupid) :D
10 inches draw=5.5lb
15 " " 10lb
20 14.5lb
23 17.5lb
24 18.5lb
25 19.7lb
So it looks to me like it can handle that draw length and mabey a bit more
without any drama.
I then shot it through the chrono and with a 255 grain bare arrow it shot 10 shots between 115 and 118 at the 23 inch mark on the arrow. All in all a very pleasing result. There is no hand shock and it is really quiet at the shot. The poundages are taken with a digital scale and marks on the tillering tree so should be reas. accurate.I also rubbed it back and gave it another couple of coats and it should be ready for the final finish ib a day or so.Thanks again for the interest guys.
Cheers KIM
That's very good figures Kim, especially at a 23" draw...Glenn...
Finally got it all together and Maggie spent some time practicing today and loves the new bow.We are off to Caboolture next w/end for a shoot and I am almost finished all the gear. This pic was taken this morning and by this afternoon the grouping was about half the size from 12 yards.

Maggie shot the little bow on the weekend in her/its 1st comp and she came third and was really happy with the results and asked me to put up a couple of pics so here you go.She only shot on the first day as the heat got to her a bit but next time it will be more serious she said.

wow looks great mate, congratulate your daughter for me, great job!
Kim you didn't strike me as the shy type - you forgot to mention that Maggie shot in the Corrival with an AWARD WINNING BOW - BEST RECURVE in the craft show . Does that put you one up on Glenn ? regards Perry
Maggie did great Kim, pity she didn't shoot some of the round on Sunday. Perry unlike Kim I didn't have enough cash on me to win a section of the Craft Show...Glenn...
Perry she won because of how she shot not because of the bow she used so I did not think it would be right to add that in but yes it was a thrill to win the bow making comp with some of the other bows there.I will try to improve on the next one and one day might be able to sit at the same table and talk bow building with the guys like Glenn.
Cheers KIM

where did you get the plans from? That looks just like a bought one! I may try to build one myself.
Kim I can understand that last sentiment about wanting to sit at the bowyers bar and talk with some credibility .
Glenn I dont believe there was any graft or coruption amounst the judges as I would have won if there was . regards Perry
