i could tell today was going to be a good day and it was. it was a day were everything went right, nearly anyway. my old man and i left bathurst at about 5.00am and arrived at the property a bit after 6.00am. we got the gear ready, got in camo and headed off into the hills for a few hours chasing fallow. we new we would find them but just not sure were. we climbed the first hill and had a bit of a look a round. we walked another 100m or so and there they were. 3 does one of them white and we were only 70yards away. the first thing i did was get the camera to keep you guys happy and snapped a few pics. in the first pic the white doe's back side is to the left of the orange doe and in the 2nd she is to the right of the orange doe. she is hard to see but try and spot her.

they fed towards us and i ranged a few trees. there was a big gum tree at 37 yards and if they got to there i would take a shot. i put an arrow onto the rest, clipped my release to the string and waited. the white doe came to that tree so i rose my bow and that slight movement had them spooked. no shot presented itself for the few seconds she starred. its been a dream of mine to get a deer since i started bowhunting and every hunt i try. that stalk showed me they were not impossible.
my dad and i had a rest and looked over the hills for more deer but only spotted goats. we new were the does would be and so headed in that direction. after a bit of a walk i saw movement and crouched. sure enough it was the 3 does. i ranged them at 84yards and ranged trees in between so if they got to those trees i could shoot. the wind blew round a bit and they started to move off and to my delight in a curve around us. the 3 does walked to the right of us and started barking but seemed to want to get closer for a look. the white doe and her friend stopped in a small clearing and i drew. this time i had to get one. i released to see the arrow go over her back and i was devastated. i had not ranged that spot and they looked a little further than they were. still i was happy to to have my first shot at a deer before this years season ended.
we decided to search for more deer and checked out a few creeks but nothing came up. we then headed in the direction of were we saw about 70 goats that morning and on the way spooked some more fallow from 50yards in thick bush. the goats had moved on and so we left them.we headed back to the car to drive to another creek that we dont usually hunt. dad stayed for a sleep and so i went ahead. within 100m into the creek i spooked to nannies from 10yards in blackberries. 1 ran off and the other stayed. i drew on her in the hope of getting meat only for her to bolt as i was resting the pin. more goats were heard up ahead so i gained some height and started the stalk. 2 more nannies were found and so they had a quick modelling session with the camera and i let them go.

another 40m or so 2 more different nannies were found. they were looking at me and so i thought to myself if i can open my backpack, range them, load an arrow and shoot before they run off i will. one ran and so i shot the other from 30yards. she ran 30 yards or so down a cliff had a laugh at me and layed to rest. it took me half an hour to slide myself down and nearly fall to my death a few times. sorry for the bad pic but she had a bit of blood over her. i took a leg put it in my meatbag and then in my pack to try and climb out. not sure how the meat will turn out as it was hot, flies were around and it took me an hour to get it to the esky but we will see.

B4E- that was an awesome yarn, regardless of whether you dropped a doe or not. Too bad about the high arrow- stuff happens in the heat of the moment in any form of archery, and under bowhunting pressure even more so. Mennell fallow are certainly desriable, and a white skin would look nice next to a standard fallow on the wall.
