gday everyone, i have recently been reading alot of the traditional bowhunting stories on here and have been thinking about buying a recurve, but i dont know much about trad hunting or trad bows at that so i was wondering if you might be able to introduce me to what it is like hunting with a recurve instead of a compound.
i like the look of the bow jeffro has for sale in the classifieds, its the brand new one that has a hand grip like a longbow, it's a good price for me.
i'd most likely buy the #40 one for my short 25.5''dl.

thank you.

dan.

It sounds like you'd be making a good choice in weight for a first recurve. It sounds like a really good one to start on. Of course, if you get hooked on the tradbug, it won't be your last bow by a longshot. I think the best way to get into it would be to get that bow, or similar, and shoot as much as you can, as well as read as much as you can. Sign-up with ozbow.net and tradgang.com, and waste a lot of time reading, searching the forums, and asking questions. And you must be mentally prepared to experience many frustrations that in the long-run are so rewarding. You must be prepared to wave "good-bye" to many an animal that would've been smoked with your compound, because you got busted before you could get close enough; but know that when you finally connect and grass that animal, it is well-worth the difficult times it took to get there.

If I may add another thing; having just looked at those great bows, I must point-out that it would be somewhat easier to learn on a longer recurve or longbow. Although nothing is impossible, and if you put your mind to it you could do really well with one of those bows straight-up, you may be better served choosing a bow of longer, and therefore more stable, length.

Dan I think that would be a good bow and the the price looks good. That's a good weight to start on. Get yourself a good back quiver and pratice speed shooting when you get a bow, it's one of the things that go hand in hand with recurves and longbows and will pay off many times over when you are out hunting.
I have always prfered a longbow or a recurve over a compound and in some hunting situations the trad gear wiil leave the hi-tec equipment for dead, once you get the feel for recurves and longbows the compounds just don't feel right, well to me anyway...Glenn...

thank you for that ben, i shot my mates recurve a whie back which is fairly small for a recurve and i wasn't to bad with it so i think i should be able to learn on that internature i hope.

cheers Glenn, they sound like lot's of fun and i like a bit of extra challenge.
would be more rewarding getting a bunny with a curve over a compound i recon.

Dan practice as much as you can with it and the bow will give you more satification than you can imagine, when you pull of fsome running shots with the recurve you will amaze yourself what you can do with one...Glenn...

Dan try to read up on instinctive shooting, it's a more free style of shooting, you just have to put the practice into it so it becomes just that, freestyle and not mechanical, you will just be able to look at a target and shoot it, well that's the theory anyway, but once you have perfeced it you wont have to think about hitting the target...Glenn...

trad shooting is good but yes, as the boys have said before me, you will miss many an animal. small poundages are also good to start with (i started on 30# for a few months then moved to 50#). one other thing that might help you with getting distances correct when aiming is to use the tip of the arrow as a reference (like pins on sights).
