Yes, I have a confession to make,
I am addicted to hunting HARES, those Long Eared, Buck Tooth, Gangly Legged Rodents.
There is just something about them that has got me in hook line and sinker!!
Yes, I can hear you saying "They are a bit stupid or a bit scatter brained" , but let me tell you that is only for a short period of the year and as usual it is to do with the breeding season (as with most of us blokes ,women do strange things to us!!;)) they don't get the saying "AS MAD AS A MARCH HARE" for nothing!!!
Sure you will get the odd easy one, but for every one of them there are half a dozen that have tested you to the max.
You might shot the odd one while you are hunting something else and that's great but to go out and target them as a specific species they don't come easy.
Just when you are starting to think you have them worked out they will blow you out of the water and leave you standing there looking like a fool.
I have a lot of respect for the old Hare and he still amazes me how he can be all over you like stink on a monkey and gone once he turns the afterburners on.
I am talking full camo, face mask, gloves, wind in your face, moving at a snails pace and he is on you and gone and you are not even in the ball park!!
They crack me up sometimes with their antics and the way they go about their lives, but they are a survivor and wired to the max, I mean I have been in under ten yards on them drawn back pin on them, a fraction of a second from pulling the trigger and for no reason,"Gone" in a heart beat , under ten again, shot gone from a solo cam bow doing 300+ f.p.s. and they are gone by two body lengths!!!!! Their body language is another thing that gets me in, you have been sneaking up on one for the best part of half an hour and you make one small mistake, the head goes up the ears go back along the body the legs start to twitch and you know it's all over but you still try anyway and you are left there standing with egg on your face.
They do have a few downfalls though, they are very territorial and they do come to call at certain times of the year,I don't know what it is but it just doesn't feel right to me when I have one come in while I am whistling for a fox, but I don't look a gift horse in the mouth and usually try and take them.
Being so territorial I have gotten to know some of them nearly on a first name bases and these are usually the ones that blow me out of the water and leave me just shaking my head and moving on to try again.
It says allot for "Lepus Europaeus" that over in Europe they are classed as a trophy animal , so if you want a challenge and haven't given him much thought, give him a go you will be surprised.
Oh yeah, just like any addict ,"I COULD GIVE IT UP IF I HAD TO"..............
