View Full Version : I'M ADDICTED!!! (Warning Picture Heavy)

Yes, I have a confession to make,
I am addicted to hunting HARES, those Long Eared, Buck Tooth, Gangly Legged Rodents.
There is just something about them that has got me in hook line and sinker!!
Yes, I can hear you saying "They are a bit stupid or a bit scatter brained" , but let me tell you that is only for a short period of the year and as usual it is to do with the breeding season (as with most of us blokes ,women do strange things to us!!;)) they don't get the saying "AS MAD AS A MARCH HARE" for nothing!!!
Sure you will get the odd easy one, but for every one of them there are half a dozen that have tested you to the max.
You might shot the odd one while you are hunting something else and that's great but to go out and target them as a specific species they don't come easy.
Just when you are starting to think you have them worked out they will blow you out of the water and leave you standing there looking like a fool.
I have a lot of respect for the old Hare and he still amazes me how he can be all over you like stink on a monkey and gone once he turns the afterburners on.
I am talking full camo, face mask, gloves, wind in your face, moving at a snails pace and he is on you and gone and you are not even in the ball park!!
They crack me up sometimes with their antics and the way they go about their lives, but they are a survivor and wired to the max, I mean I have been in under ten yards on them drawn back pin on them, a fraction of a second from pulling the trigger and for no reason,"Gone" in a heart beat , under ten again, shot gone from a solo cam bow doing 300+ f.p.s. and they are gone by two body lengths!!!!! Their body language is another thing that gets me in, you have been sneaking up on one for the best part of half an hour and you make one small mistake, the head goes up the ears go back along the body the legs start to twitch and you know it's all over but you still try anyway and you are left there standing with egg on your face.
They do have a few downfalls though, they are very territorial and they do come to call at certain times of the year,I don't know what it is but it just doesn't feel right to me when I have one come in while I am whistling for a fox, but I don't look a gift horse in the mouth and usually try and take them.
Being so territorial I have gotten to know some of them nearly on a first name bases and these are usually the ones that blow me out of the water and leave me just shaking my head and moving on to try again.
It says allot for "Lepus Europaeus" that over in Europe they are classed as a trophy animal , so if you want a challenge and haven't given him much thought, give him a go you will be surprised.

Oh yeah, just like any addict ,"I COULD GIVE IT UP IF I HAD TO"..............
......................................."NOT" :P

No "hare-restorer" will help those holed hares! You're deadly, bloke. What becomes of them? Any for the pot, do they go to the dogs, used for fox bait?

Ive tried for them in the vineyard at my aunties place once,I got a shot off but only cause I was whistling and a fox scared the hares towards me.
Well done with so many hares mate!

The HARE THUMPER has arrived. Great pics as well. Perhaps you could of turned the first hare (photo) around a tad to cover up the blood, just my opinion.. Either way - GREAT STUFF.... Howie

I can see a definite hare junky here. You've got a healthy addiction by the looks of it. Well done.

Some nice looking hares there,
No doubt their ability to stay away from predators (us included :P) and breed like... well, rabbits, has made them such a pest here. Probably why poisoning was brought in, not much about that which can give it away, unless it sprouted arms and legs and started taking potshots at the bunny.

That's a really weird image :S

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the comments,

Norm Gunston,
I always make an effort and recover the hares for a mates dogs,
they go nuts over them!!

Blakey-Boi,
I am using three bladed 125Gr Muzzy's at the momment, as I have found them allot better on thin skinned game such as foxes and hares as the wound channel they create is deverstating, their cutting circle is 1 3/16.
I have always only ever used two bladed broadheads on hares, but because they are so wired and jump the string ,sometimes the shot goes a bit back from where you are aiming and I have found that extra blade on the Muzzy can make a huge difference in cutting an organ.
Hope this helps.

Howie,
Thanks for your comment,
I did think really carefully about posting that photo, but that was the good side!! and it is one of my favorite photos.
I always pick the best side of the animal for my photos and always make sure that nothing is hanging out.
Hares as you know really bleed alloooooot, and I don't like having the animal facing with it's back or it's belly towards the camera.
I like to record eveyone that I get, some I will not post as they may offend.
I will take it off it offends anyone??

Grant.
