It can be trad or modern and will need to consist of making an arrow from a bare shaft and all the equipment involoved in the process. So get your projects in and score some cool gear from Bullzeye. Post your entries here. We will move them to the technical section when the comp is finished. Thanks and good luck.

I made these arrows up a couple of years ago now and still have about half of them to use.

I started off with some 11/32 cedar shafts, approx 2 doz.
Then sorted them by weight and straightness.
I then cut the tapers with a pencil type sharpener.
Shafts were then lightly sanded to get a nice finish.
Then glued the nocks on using 5min alradite making sure to have the grain on each shaft running the same way in comparison to nock so as to keep them all as consistant as possible to avoid any problems later when shot off the shelf in regard to stiffness.

I then used a rag and wiped on some Rosewood stain (Cabbots)
left to dry in my arrow stand over night.
I then used the same rag wiping technic (good quality bed sheets do the trick) to apply 2 coats of a satin clear coat. Allowing time between each coat and a very light sanding between coats as well.

By this time I had designed the cresting for them.
which I made a stencil to work from to maintain consistancy when cresting.

I did a dummy run on a Tassie Oak dowel from Bunnings

For the cresting I used Humbrol model paints (gloss) from a toy store.
I utilised my wood lathe to do the cresting on the lowest speed possible.
I made a jig to hold the nock using the locator ridge on them. While the other end sat nicely in the hollow centre of the tail stock.

using the tool rest to steady my hand with brush
I started with a base coat of Silver (could also use white)
Then a coat of white.
Then the orange
Black and Silver high lights last.
I didn't have to wait long between coats as by the time i got through 2 doz shafts the first ones were dry and ready for the second colour.

And the cresting finished including a flu-flu made from the dummy run on the Tassie Oak

I then got busy cutting my 5" feathers from full length feathers (2 per full length feather) which were then stuck on using loctite and a fletching jig.

I kept the two lots of arrows seperated through this whole process.
One lot for target and the other for hunting.
I then fitted using 5min alradite the field points and broadheads (160 grain ribbies).
I found the alradite gave me enough time to spin the arrows and make any adjustments needed to make sure the points were spinning true.

This is the business end of the jig I made to get my heads spinning true, the nock end has the same roller set up as the one in the pic.
