Just got back from a weeks hunting on Merluna Station, south of Weipa, Cape York with my good mate Big John and 2 new mates Steve and Mick, guided by Pat & Clint of Bowhunters Lodge.
When we arrived at the airport in Weipa we met the blokes that had just finished their hunt with Pat. They said that we would have a good time and the food would be great. Well they were not wrong, the meals that Michelle prepared for us were fantastic and even John had his fill (2 huge plates later).
The first night we had a thunderstorm with about 25mm of rain. This made it tough going for the first 3 days as the sighting of boars was slim.

Pat & Clint worked their backsides off to try and get us onto some good boars, but the rain had given the boars plenty of ground water and their habits changed. By the end of 3rd day things were starting to hot up with sightings of good trophy boars was becoming very regular. Steve and Mick (who we had never met before) are a real good blokes and we had a lot of fun and would hunt with them again.

Steve and Mick had a "Crack" at a few good boars and dogs, with Steve getting a good dog on the 1st or 2nd day. Mick bagged a real good boar and caped it out for a mount, plus getting another on the last day. Big John also bagged a couple of good boars with his biggest being 26 4/8.

John also got a Brumby Stallion after it chased away the scrub bulls we were after. I was lucky enough to get 2 good boars, 1 at 30 4/8 and the other 26 6/8, plus a Brumby Stallion and a very nice scrub bull. We all had other opportunities on boars, but were unlucky with either the wind or missed shots. The 2nd half of the week was hot and if we hadn't had the rain, the entire week would have been on fire.

I know that we are going back in 2008 for a couple of reasons
(a) Pat and Clint are very good guides who have a passion to get the hunter onto big boars.
(b) They are extremely professional and very easy to get along with
(c) They work their butts off to make sure you have the best chance to take a trophy boar
(d) The property has 100's of trophy class or better boars
(e) Quality Scrub Bulls abound on Merluna Station
(f) Our hosts, Cameron & Michelle are fantastic and the accommodation and meals were well above our previous hunt experiences.
We are already planning our 2008 hunt.

Merluna is a great property, meals, lodging and guided hunting are as good as it gets.

Too expensive, some might say, but if you add up the cost of all the trips you take that arent real flash, and just save up for the Merluna experience, I reckon it would be on a par.

Also airline tickets are a lot cheaper than the cost of fuel to the cape, when you add it all up, its not that much extra to go first class hunting Merluna.

What showing that we actually KILL animals with our bows and arrows is bad...
Just as feral as the cute little kitty kats and bambi and babe for that matter...
