I know this has been done before in different ways so I've put them together with some of my own

A series of pictures on where to aim and whats behide that spot

pic 1. thanks to coach. but difficult to see where the spine joins into the back of the head
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/dposs/shotplacepig.jpg

pic 2. thanks to adam. but again can't truely see how far back the lungs extend
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/dposs/hogshotplacement.jpg

after seeing those two and the one from mcsteve I would like too share my photos of the real thing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/dposs/anatpig1.jpg

now with the skin removed you can see even in this young boar how thick the skin is starting to get at the top of the neck and also the fighting pad on the shoulder was as thick as the skin and fat layer together

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/dposs/anatpig3.jpg

this next pic I've taken all the meat away from the top of the spine to show that in the neck area any shot front of the shoulder will do nothing but wound the aminal also to show how far below the top of the back the spine runs, this is why shots to the top of the should result in spine shots.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/dposs/anatpig5.jpg

this last pic I've opened the rib cage to show the lay of the heart and lungs you can see that the liver runs the full length of the diaphram and that a shot not far behide the shoulder will only result in a gut shot as stated by mcsteve, quartering shot being the better choice for lite to mid range poundage bows or straight through the shoulder for thoses who shoot higher poundage (65 plus#)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v650/dposs/anatpig7.jpg

as we keep telling people its about shot placement
hope this helps

Top stuff mate.....the vital area really isnt as big as I thought it was. I had seen the drawing that Adam posted previously a long time ago and it shows the lungs extending almost half way down the length of the pig....very misleading. Proves there's no substitute for the real thing.

Just checking out some older subjects, and glad i found this one, it has explained a few things for me, and how tight you have to hit'em behind the shoulder. Excellent photos, well done.

Cheers for the info mate. We did the same thing to a dolphin at uni, you seem to learn a lot more by getting your hands dirty (or bloody):D

hey Tac,
That last pic with the ribs opened up doesnt look a whole lot like the ABA manuals shot placement guide. That pig must be a freak of nature, lol.

Very good post. I wish the ABA bowhunters education manual pictures were of real game with the ribs laid back. Might be less wounded game running around.
