hunt or be hunted

howdy guy's,

today i went for a hunt before work and then again when i got home, heres how the day panned out.

last wednesday my mate zack yates (yatesy54) darred me to come to school decked out in full camo, and the reward would be a dozen arrows and a few diffenrent types of heads, well i couldn't say no so on thursday i rocked up in my home made leafy suit my hunting cap and camo pant's, walking to my locker with kids pointing at me a saying things to there friends had me thinking maybe it wasn't such a good idea but then i thought about the reward and i just blocked everyone out. i got to my locker and was greeted by zack who had a big grin from ear to ear, he was also in camo but didnt look half as stupid as me. he lived up to his promise and he handed me the arrows, blunts and a couple of other thing's, i was happy im pretty sure he was happy that i was getting laughed at and we went on with the day.

this morning i emerged from my den (room) and picked up my bow, grabbed 4 arrows and the same amount of fieldpoints and judo's. after weighing up the arrows with fieldpoints to weigh the same as the judo's i went out to the target and it only took me about 4 shots and i was ready to go, i couldnt believe a shot i got from 20m it was dead centre in the yellow circle!
i only had about half an hour before i had to leave for work so i chose to hunt the spot up the road, i jumped on my bike and rode to the bridge at the far end of the paddock's, i put it under the bridge and walked into the first paddock, i couldnt see any rabbits while i was walking up the fence line and i thought it was going to be an unaventful hunt, but it all changed when i hoped over a few strands of wire and three kittens ran down there burrows, i walked along the dead blackberrys and drew on a rabbit that was running just to my right, it ran down its burrow and then i saw movement to my left, i watched as rabbits ran through the blackberry's and then one stoped at a warren on the outside so i very quickly aimed and released, the judo went through its spine and into its ribs, the first bunny for the day hit the deck and then i had to ride home and get ready for work.

while i was stocking shelfs at GO-LO:P i had a feeling that i just had to get back out there and go hunting, the 4 hours passed and i was soon on my way to the plataue, i was keen as to put these judo's to the test and thats just what i did. i climbed through the fence and planted my elbow on the top of a stinging nettle bush and it was not a good feeling! i came out of the trees and was standing on the side of the hill when a bunny came bounding down towards me i stoped and it stoped no more then 12 metres away, i came to full draw and then about four more bunny's came down the hill and stoped with the other one, i now was standing at full draw with only trees as a backdrop and a group of about five big bunny's sitting still and not having any idea that i wa there, they were scratching there ears and enjoying themselfs, it was hard to choose but i chose to have a shot at one that was straight infront of me, i didnt see my shaft in flight but all i saw was the bunny droped where it stood. i walked over and picked it up, the judo had done its job well and my arrow had gone in a bit far back but went through into the heart and lungs.

after the photos i moved on to the next hot spot, which i ended up having a shot at a kitten and it dived down its hole at the last second. i then walked on further and spotted a couple of kittens run to the doorway of their burrow i put in a quick stalk but they were too good for me.
i placed an arrow on the string as i stalked along the side of the hill and rose up to where i could overlook a warren that usually has lots of bunny's sittng outside it, i was surprised to not see a thing, but when i wentnto turn around i saw a kitten kicking in the grass about 1 foot away, i could see there was something wrong with it so i picked it up and had a look to see if there was anything visible, i could see the bite marks from a dog and then i heard two dogs barking on top of the plataue and that explains it all, i finished it off and didnt bother taking any photos because i didnt shoot it. when i was kneeling down behind a blackberry bush looking at it i saw a bunny come out of a hole where i found the kitten next to, i picked up my bow and had a shot, it ducked my arrow and i missed.

the sun was setting and i had to keep moving, so i got to my feet and walked on, i got through another fence and walked along a thin track for a while before i came to a warren where i have to draw back and then walk up over a rise so i can see whats about, usually the rabbits all run but this time they all stayed there and i took a shot at a tiny kitten that was closest out of them all, i couldn't hear my arrow in flight, my new gear is bloody awesome, i love it. and i hit the kitten a little bit far back so i quickly sent him to rabbit heaven.

on the way home i was walking along the side of the hill where i shot the first bunny and i was thinking about the day when my legs slipped out from underneath me and i slammed down onto my bow, i got back up and my arm was in great pain, i thought it was broken because i couldn't move my fingers and it felt like there were electric shocks going through my veins, but the pain slowly faded away and i was alright thank god.

well that was todays hunt's and i will definatly be using judo's from now on, they pull up in the grass really good and are accurate, i think i love them hehe

cya all later.

dan.

Scoring rabbits before riding your bike to work- here's one young Aussie on his way to being somebody. Great attitude; including "I don't care what anyone else thinks, I'll wear what I jolly well please!" Top stuff HOBH.

Nah mate thats not love. You'll know when you're in love as your bow will be sitting covered in dust in the corner of your shed;) Make the most of the hunting while you can:D

Ah yes ya Bow might gather a bit of dust for awhile if she is not interested in Bowhunting. Give it a year and I will bet ya bring it out of hiding and go for a hunt.

But if your as lucky as I am and have a wife/hunting partner that is as keen as I, now that is the real deal.;)

Nice bunnies Dan, do you ever see any foxes ?

With that many rabbits around it usually attracts foxes. I`ve hunted plenty around Newstead and there is foxes there if you look for them, so I reckon there would be a few hanging around your paddocks as well.

Cheers Steve

gday steve, theres a few around but pretty much none where i hunt bunny's, i saw a fox at one of my spots a few weeks ago for the first time in about a year i'd recon but i was using the air rifle so i couldn't shoot it and i was only about 14metres away and it didnt know i was there!:( there's a few around at night but i cant seem to get any to come to the whistle when im with my bow. i have one property thats covered in them so i'll have to head out there sometime soon.

cya mate.
