gents,
i have taken 4 foxes and wasted everyone cause i have not been able to skin them or take the tail. i was wondering if anyone could please give me some tips or tricks? id actually rather just take the piece of skin running from the tip if the snout, down each side of the fox, and around underneath the tail. that way im hoping to end up with the face, about a 8inch wide strip of back skin and the tail on the other end. any ideas appreciated...

Well done Pedro, that is better than waiting for someone to do a write up ,as it then depended on someone getting a fox first, then take photos etc, what you have posted should do the trick.

I skin my foxes the same way. But I put my fingers in the eye holes when doing the face as its easy to cut the eye holes. This way you go slow so you don't cut your finger and feel the knife.

Thank you for the info Pedro. I have posted before about how to do the tails. The illustration is tops. Just have to get another. Went close the other arvo. Who says camo dont work. I was eyeball to eyeball at 15 m with one a couple of arvos ago and he did not have a clue what I was until I raised the old arm :P He then slipped back into the lantana I had the wind good, threw a stick in and he popped out about 20m away. Had a shot but went low from his reaction as he disappeared in some more of the weed.

I do it similar but different...I start at the gonads and pull away skin and scour UP to the ankles..then go around the ankles and take the foot off as one piece...or four actually it's a quadruped after all...do the tail almost the same too...though I help it out with a long screw driver...very good..very nice....I like this site...first skinned a rabbit when I was shown at 6 yrs old...did foxes at 8......tanning is a ***** here for me...dunno who to get the chems from???....back in UK is noooo problemmm....yoiks! tally-ho !

What do chems do you use to tan with?

Acetone and methanol are publicly available in Australia, or you go traditional and use the animals brains.

.

There are 3 different methods of tanning at the following link. Salt & alum, alcohol & turps, old school brain tan.

I do mostly the same for all but the tail. The way i do the tail is strip all the way to the tail then split it on the length of the inside edge. Then take the rest of the pelt & twist it around twice & pull off, leaving the bone behind. This methoed leaves your fox skin to lay the most natural way. I also do my skins for deer & goats the same way. I have found this lays the most natural after tanning. Just my method that works for me.

The quickest I've seen a fox skinned was approx. 2-3min. by an Aboriginal friend. He just zipped it up the back legs, two sticks on the tail etc. pulled it off like a jumper, the same way you would skin a rabbit, if you wanted to keep the skin.
