G'day All

After many trials and tribulations I'm ready to start tillering my selfbow. However, upon bracing the bow to a brace height of 6" I'm noticing a lot of limb twist. Namely the top limb twists from right to left and the bottom limb twists from left to right. How do I correct this? Is this something I stuffed up in the shaping process? Check it out...

This is not a problem at all Dave and infact a lot of seasoned bowyers call this character and not a limb twist. This happens a lot and it is not very hard to fix at all. If you have a heat gun and if not I would get one if you want to do more selfbows. Just place your bow in a vise where the twist starts or clamp it to a bench and then fix a clamp to the end of the limb and you can add weights to to clamp to use as a counter weight, I just hang other clamps or a small container of water off the handle to twist the limb in the opposite direction as the twisted limb section is being heated. You will see the limb being twisted in the opposite direction as the section heats up. It's a guessing game at this stage as to how much to twist the limb in the other direction, but let the limb cool right down before stringing and checking the twist. If it is not enough all you have to do is repeat and twist a little further. If the twist is really stubborn and th dry heat is not working then you may have to steam heat that section and repeat the process...Glenn...
