I am going to start the tactic of sitting and waiting so I am thinking of investing in a tree stand or Blind . So if anyone has some advice on which on would be better or anything else about them please do so. i have a few questions as how high do i need to put the stand up in the tree for a deer not to smell me. Can deer smell you if you are inside a blind.

thanks

i dont know much about deer but i do know that if your short of cash then a blind or even a treestand too is an easy weekend job to put together.
I made a blind, it's noly a quick crappy one but i8f you put a little bit more money and time into it it wouldnt be hard to make a decent one...

I have used a treestand on Fallow and set it up for Sambar use as well. On the Fallow I put it up around 6m. The Sambar spots it is around 4-5m up. The Fallow that have walked under my stand have had no idea I was there, neither did the fox or 'roos that sat under me for a while. My good friend arrowed a Sambar in between the shoulders directly below his stand, that shot was about 5.5m!
The wind factor depends on where you set your stand. If you perch on the side of the hill and the deer walks in on you from the top, if the wind is going that way he will naturally smell you, if he comes in on the downhill side with the wind going with him you will be in luck. This is where stand selection is paramount, you need to have a good idea of what the wind will do in that particular area.
On the flat area it is not as critical as the wind tends to carry your scent at the same height as your stand, this should give you an idea as to how high you position your stand
I have made 5 treestands and sold four of them off at about $110 each to my mates, having had the experience of doing this, next time I would just buy one from a local or international supplier, the last one I looked at on ebay sold for about $130 including the ever needed harness.
When you have a treestand there is a multitude of crap you need to carry into the bush. It is not something you want to carry for 3kms. You also need screw in or strap on foot pegs (10), harness, rope to lift your stand/gear up to the set up height and pruning equipment to give you decent shooting lanes.
Having said all that, it is great to watch deer and other wild animals wander around you, totally oblivious to your presence 6m up in the air.

Sorry, I have had nothing to do with ground blinds. I have seen cheaper pop up type blinds on ebay that look easy to pack and set up. I know there are some others on here that have used them. They may have some info for you.
