I am looking at the purchase of a new bow from the states while the dollar is still up there. Are there any hidden taxes/costs/restrictions related to the import of a new bow that i'm not seeing? I don't want a nasty surprise with my new christmas toy.
Thanks

If you keep the purchase price under 1000 aussie dollars you are exempt from having to pay GST and import tax etc...

Thanks, I checked the customs website and the way I understand it I think I'll be OK. They calculate duty on purchase price exclusive of freight. My bill with freight is just over the $1000 AUD. I'm sure they will let me know if they want more money!

Might want to inquire about warranty issues with over seas purchases, just in case things go wrong.

i have made a purchase over the 1000au mark, infact it was 990us or something and i did not get charged tax. it might have helped i had them in 2 packages but still i think i was very lucky not to get taxed etc.

Yes sir, you do get a warrenty.
But the bow must be sent back to the purchase place to get the warrenty at your expense and returned at your expense.
I know because Ive been there and done that a couple times...

i always though that any dealer had to honor a warrenty just like a car.Like buying a new holden you do not have to take it back to the holden dealer you bought it from just to a dealer. i have never bought OS but figured it would be like here. If i bought a bow from a store and it then closed down are you telling me that i am not covered??? I know for a fact bowtec honor there bows well archery supplies do as my mate bought his from a now closed down dealer and they still honored his warrenty. Correct me if i am way off but that is how i thought it went.

A dealer does not have to honor some other dealers warrenty. Most will though.
Though I know a few that wont honor an overseas bought bows warrenty.

Customs calculate the amount including freight and the right to charge is at their discretion.

Most manufacturers of compound bows will have the warranty placed on the website somewhere but my understanding is that the importer and distributor of bows does not have to honour the warranty on a bow purchased from an overseas dealer. This is unless it is part of the distributors contract with the manufacturer to obtain the distribution in the first place.

Bowtech are very dealer loyal so I would imagine that Archery supplies are not required to honour warranty on an overseas purchased bow, however for a dealer that has closed down then the purchase was made within the distribution network which they cover and warranty would apply.
