Hey i was woundering if anyone here knows where you would be able to purchase some bamboo flooring for making a laminated bow. I am making a bow as a tech project at school and would like some help finding some of this bamboo. I know there would be more info on ozbow but i dont really want to join the site just yet because i dont use trad so can anyone here help me. thanx

Macka, a lot of carpet showrooms sell bamboo flooring these days. You would have to get the solid flooring that is laminated up in thin strips. You can buy it in natural and carbonized which has been heat treated, price varies from around $60 to $80 per sq meters. Haven't tried the bamboo flooring myself yet but plenty of people have with good results.
macka are you making a glass laminated bow or an all wood composite bow?...Glenn...

Macka don't let the fact that you don't shoot trad yet stop you from joining Ozbow, the guys there won't mind at all and are a wealth of knowledge to tap into.
I joined there way before I got my first curve.

Macka are you going to make a longbow or a recurve. Are you planning to design the bow and make the form yourself. Its really easy to make a longbow, you just need a straight piece of timber and plenty of clamps. If you like I can give you a hand with tapered timber laminations or I can supply you with some master tapers so you can taper your own laminations yourself.
If you are going to make a recurve there is a bit more to consider but it's not that hard when you know what to do, and I can helpyou out there as well, no worries...Glenn...

Thanks again Glenn i have been browsing the ozbow forum and would like to make a longbow because i saw a laminated one that a guy called stick bow i think it was mad as a build along. i don’t have any plans or anything so i was just going to make up my own but any plans you could give me would be a great help. I like the sound of those pre-tapered laminations because if i didn’t have to taper them it means i cant stuff that bit up. What would the prices be if i was to buy these off you Glenn?? i am at school right now and we have plenty of clamps here. If you would rather this go through PM just send the details in a PM.

Thanx Macka

Macka , no charge mate, you will need need to tell me what lenght bow you want to make and what poundage you would like, not a good idea to go too heavy first up especially if you don't have an oven to cure it in. There is no hard and fast formula for making a longbow or any bow from sctratch until you have made a few from that form, it's all guess work at first. If you just make a straight limb longbow you can a 100x50 hardwood stud that is straight for the form. Lay the bow up on the 50mm edge and clamp the bow laminations to that. if you lay it up in the morning on a fine warm day you could just put the bow into a car with the windows wound up or under black plastic in full sun will be enough to cure he glue...Glenn...

Glenn mate that is just too good to be true surely i can give you something for it?? I know close to nothing about long bows but was thinking of making it around 60 odd inch but you would have more idea of what would be best. I use a 70 pound compound and think that maybe 55-60 pound for a recurve because i would like to try my luck on the goats with it if i can get consistent groups. I have been talking to my tech teacher and we will use powerful lights in a cupboard to create the heat to cure the glue. Look forward to hearing from you.

If you are making a longbow Macka I wouldn't go any shorter than 66". Length of the bow will depend a lot on you draw length and the lenght of the riser. What do you draw on your compound?...Glenn...

Hey on my compound i have a 30 inch draw length and yeah what ever would be best for the length because i really dont have much idea.

Hi guys. I am in the hunt for a longbow, it is what I have always wanted, and I would like a heavier bow. I am looking for a 68-70", 72-75lb, english style longbow. I have thought about making my own, which will be a great experience and reduce the costs, but I havn't really got around to it because I want to make a good shooter, and not a bow that isn't the right weight and to my draw length.

Where can I get a good form?

Any ideas would be much appreciated. :)

Well shaped the limbs today to where i thought would be about right and put some temperary notches in to test the poundage and it told me i dont know much! LOL i only got it back about 20 inch and it was about 75# at that draw. i think i'll have to take some more off. But is looking good and should turn out well!

Macka whats the string length, Ill make you up one outta the last stuff I have.

macka
15-09-05, 06:27 PM
Hey mate that would be awsome of you if you are for real! The string length is 64" thats from top of each loop. How do you measure a string is that right? the bow is 70". I just came inside from putting about 40 arra's through it with the platted bailing twine and i have to say its amazing how quick i am picking it up. I took it home because i wanted to shot with it to make sure i could handle the poundage and it shoots well and i am drawing it to about 26 inch. we have some scales that only go up to 50 pound and at 18" the bow is at 50" so i would say at my draw it would be about 70 or maybe over at my draw with it. Just need ot finish off with a very good sand and polish to make it look awsome. Oh and almost go my first kill with it we have some holes out the back of the hay shed and i saw a bunny sitting on them and put in a stalk to 15m but was only going to shoot if i got within 8. I will give you somthing for the string adam at least let me pay for the materials or do you have a cost for it?

If we can comfirm 64" anyone.

Im more then happy to did it macka, I been shown better hospitality by bowhunters over the years, and what go's around comes around.
I'm sure you'll do the same in years to come if you can mate.

Please email me your address.
Adam

p.s actaully you can do something for me, tell me what timbers you used and what the flooring was made from.

This may help you :D

To determine the length of of a bowstring, in most cases the following guidlines can be followed:

Longbows: 2 to 3 inches shorter than the bow.
Recurve Bows: 3 to 4 inches shorter than the bow.

If you are unsure how long your bow is, you need to measure it from nok to nok on the belly/inside of the bow (the side that faces you when you draw) and follow the contours of the limbs.

Would assume the brace height would be around 7" for a 70" bow

Where exactly on the riser is the brace height measured????

Hey thanx adam will send you a PM :D . Thanx axe i have just been going by the brace hieght for the length of the string. I have been using a 64" platted piece of bailing twine that makes the brace 7.5 but i measured it when it was not on the bow will it stretch when on the bow? Maybe i will have to look into this string a bit more adam ? :? Just measured the bow from the groves over the belly and it comes out at 69"
Axe do you think that 64" would be suitable?

And the wood i used was sent by Glenn and he diddnt charge me anything for it. He sent laminations of tiger wood and crows ash and i got myself some fiberglass laminations from ausbow for 80 bucks for the 2 72" laminations. For the handle i got out with the chainsaw and cut a heap of dead mallee and found a dry piece that diddnt have any imperfection. Tppk it to school plained it into a square block and then shaped a riser out of it :D.

Macka might be better to go a bit longer, say 64 1/2" or 65", you can always give it a few more twists :D

macka
15-09-05, 08:35 PM
Thats what i was thinking  You can't tie knots in the string to reduce the length :?: This bow will be spitting ot the ara's pretty quick when it gets a propper string i am even tempted to take a bit more off!! but i will probably be wanting a heavier one in a month so i will leave it at about 70.
